ug! School requiring chicken pox vaccine... what next - flu shot? Rant

Chickie'sMoma :

Shingles will only happen if you did not have CP severe enough as a child or if you have never had it.

Actually, this is incorrect. Once you have chicken pox the virus lies dormant in your spinal column. Shingles is when the virus decides to wake up and get nasty. My father is 74 and suffered with shingles for a couple of years recently. He had severe chicken pox as a child. I think he is actually still having some issues because of shingles, but honestly haven't asked him in awhile. I do know it is miserable, painful, and practically debilitating.

I also know a child who was hospitalized from chicken pox. Honestly, I don't know if he survived, but his prognosis was rather grim when I did know. Alright, I say know, I met his parents while staying at the Ronald McDonald house after the birth of my oldest son. Until then I had no clue it was potentially deadly.

I had them bad as a child. I have scars all over my body, including touching my bottom eyelid. I was 2 when I had them and, perhaps because of the severity, I can remember them well. I also had mumps as a child. That was very painful!!!

My middle son had chicken pox 2 years ago (yes, he was vaccinated). I was shocked since I didn't think it could happen after being vaccinated. HOWEVER, they were so mild he didn't really suffer at all. A couple of days with about 10 itchy spots, a mild fever, and he was fine.
