Ugghhh- frozen waterers....

Earlier this year I removed an old oil burning furnace that had an aboveground tank outside. To keep the four foot copper supply line (from the tank to the furnace pump inside) warm enough that the oil would not congeal, there was an insulated, plug-in line warmer/heat strap wrapped arund the line. I re-tasked this item, wrapping it around the plastic reservoir of my chickens' hanging 3 gallon waterer. The water did not freeze overnight, and all the chickens seemed more content overall. Of course this would not be practical where no electricity is available - but our site is called "backyard chickens"...and a majority of us likely do have power readily at hand.

i use a automototive battery heater pad placed between a couple of ceramic floor tiles an set my gallon plastic heater on top of tiles. i use this when temps get down below 15 degreess. keeps waterer ice free in coldests temps. using the 60 watt kats heater that can be found at hardware stores, auto parts stores, and amazon. googled them and evensome targets carry them.

How far out from the house is the coop? I hook up and run two 100' extension cords out to the coop to energize a 40W bulb powered cookie tin water fount heater. One of these days (It's on the list), I'm going to properly run electric out there.
