Sometimes, I just need to crate him. He is only 6 months old and still very much a puppy and gets into things! He is a great dog, an awesome dog, but when you crate him and go into another room he freaks out.
He'll whine, but then it escaltes into this awful not screaming but not whining, something else- frantic crying I guess. It's like finger nails on a chalk board and loud.
He's been doing this since the day I got him. If you crate him in the room you're in he's fine. It's when he can no longer see you that he loses it.
I just ignore him and wait until he is quiet to "praise" him with being let out or talked to or anything.
Will this die down? I've had him since mid April now...

My Shih Tzu is the perfect dog in a crate. The poodle? Not so much. I know that scream-cry. It is the MOST annoying sound I have ever heard and makes me really, REALLY angry.

Have you tried putting treats in hidden places in there? What about a miniature kong to keep his mind off of you leaving him?

Yes, it is the WORST noise I have ever heard. I think my ears are going to bleed. It does make me angry, I am ashamed to admit. It's just something about the pitch of it I think! and that I know there is nothing wrong with him. It's like the brat kid you see in the store pitching a fit over candy or something. Not an essential needed thing. Like the boy who cried wolf.
No, I haven't tried hiding treats. I do have a tiny kong I could give him.

I would do this:

When you get ready to leave the room, put the treat in the cage. This way, he at least sees you leaving as a somewhat good thing. Plus, his mind will be elsewhere (the treat or the kong with the treat inside). It should work. Remember to "relax" as you're leaving. Don't get anxious about the noise you MAY hear...just assume nothing's going to happen. Otherwise, he'll fell your anxiety as you're leaving.
