Ugh, need to start over

Tell the seller your situation, and I bet he or she will work with you. Most of us who raise Orpingtons can pick out the pullets from the cockerels early on.

I made a mistake earlier; it's the Buffs that are four-weeks old, not the Lavenders. You can definitely pick out the pullets at that age. They have smaller combs and thinner feet. Both the Lavenders and the Buffs are a great deal. I hope you end up with a happy outcome. Please post and let us know how things turn out for you. Take care.

Also, even if you get the Lavenders straight run, you will have no problem giving away the Lavender cockerels. That is an in-demand color, and people who breed them will cross a Lavender rooster with a Black Orpington hen every sixth generation (I believe, but I could be wrong on the number of generation when you would cross back to black.)

Thanks Bruce. I will.

MyPetChicken, whose hatchery is in Ohio, ships as few as three chicks during the warm summer months. They have every imaginable breed. Call them or go on line.

I understand the heartache you must be feeling. It's hard losing baby chicks, especially after you've had them for a few weeks and have bonded.

thanks for the information. I am looking at them here and there while at work. They do have lots of different breeds

Sorry to hear you had a boo boo.
I know for sure you could order from Ideal Poultry but I don't know it that would be too long of a travel for chicks.?
there are many many hatchery out there...Where did you get your previous chicks?

Are you sure that the latch was the problem....there is no other damage to your coop where something may have "gotten in"?

This is prime time, and not late in the season. If you got chicks now, in 6 months the hens should be laying on average, depending, of course on the breed.

Is $50.00 high for shipping chicks? Went to mypetchicken and for 3-4 chicks that is the charge + some change. Their selection is amazing. I'm feeling I would spend in just gas driving all over, especially if I go to south MO.

Sexed not bantams but 2 Easter Eggers. a Barred Rock (loved the one I had years ago), and maybe an Australorp. Dang I started wanting 2 switched to 3 as I understand better to do now maybe 4.. Getting the bird math. mareks vaccinated for 90 some cents. They say some sort of special packs to keep a few warm. Shipped USPS which is higher I think than FEDEX or UPS. Closer for me to get to to pick up. I know I could drive almost 8 hours round trip so that's taking up an entire day and lots of gas.

So, we had 3 beautiful month-old chicks, and had just started letting them sleep in the coop at night. And on their second night, I forgot to make sure everything was latched, and something got in and ate them.

So, does anyone know whether I have options for getting chicks right now? I know it's late in the season. I'm in RI.

Feeling so sick about this...

ErikaRI have you found chicks? You haven't posted for awhile. I haven't found any locally that are sexed and vaccinated. May order from mypetchickens.com as I can order just 3 chicks though the shipping is pretty high.

USPS is the only way to ship chicks. The other shippers won't touch live birds.
I am very lucky and have a fantastic feed store very close that does chicks year round. They will special order whenever someone wants a certain breed.
For me mypetchicken would be my go to for sexed bantams as they are the only place to get them sexed.
I know someone that orders through them every year and is happy with them.

Thanks for the feedback.. Not looking for bantys but full sized but I did see that they do sex them. Also didn't know other shippers would not do live birds! Interesting. I was planning on next spring but this site is horrible, it has made me anxious to get started on this journey. ;DDD
