Have you tried to moisten the membrane at all? Since the hole is big enough to get a q-tip thru, I would probably try to get some coconut oil or Vaseline in there. It would allow you to see if any veins are still prominent, or if they are receding well.

Update: The hole is barely big enough for a Qtip, but I did manage to get a couple of drops in there. Not only was he a fan, but he's made a lot more progress than I realized! You can't really see it on the outside, but when the oil touched the shell, it made it waaaay more apparent where he's been working. Pardon the commentary from me and my mom (she was there to assist) and Loki in the background wanting to know why we were in the bathroom without letting her come along.
