Hi All,

I have a problem with Lice, i just can't get rid of the buggers, i've dusted and dusted and just when i think i'm on top of them they bounce back. I have two cockerels, i'm wondering if they are getting a good dusting as they don't sit in the nest boxes, but i have scattered the stuff everywhere, in the coops, perches, their dusting area and i have grabbed everyone and get them a smothering including the boys. I've searched on here for answers and found some good ones but as i'm in the UK i can't seem to get hold of the products. I've tried naturalish remedies (D.E, Nettex, all manner of louse powders) i'm ready for something stronger.
Anyone got any idea?

A good friend of mine had the same problem and when we sat down to geather the only things that couldkeep causing this
1)wild animals might be getting into ur coop at night so fence of any and all holes big and small
2) it's might not actually be lice get a vet in to confirm what ever they have
3) starlized the Cokp for a few weeks with lime taking it off and on include drinkers feeder perched etc
4) get new hens
5)if they are running around a farm then they might be getting it from other animals so check all ur live stock
6) the worse one is u might have dead animals lying about and the chicken might be peaking at them eg. Birds rats minks all are know to carry lice and verious deiseas in the UK
I hope one of these will help and if u are going to try any of them definitely start with a vet

I did the same thing with my Husband, and we have concluded the cause could have been wild birds, I hd a wild bird feeder just outside of my chicken run and have seen pigeons milling around. I've cleared away the bird feeder and my chicken feeders pest proof but I just get on top of the lice.
I have definitely considered dispatching them all and starting again but that seems unfair when there are ways to prevent and control it.

Yeah it's just a few ideas that came to our heads never heard of pigions being a while problem with live tho but I'm not to far from the UK and we have a serious amount of crows and black birds they would be bad with lice and I've vivisit the UK many many times and crows and seagull s are a big problem for some farmers that I've ever spoken to
Maybe this is irelvent to u but just thought I'd share in case u wanted to try any of the ideas

Hi :frow

Do you mean Red mite in your coop or lice on your birds?

Coop red mite, they live in the coop and not on the bird. They come out of nooks & crannies to feed from the birds on a night when they are roosting ~

Chicken lice, they live on the bird leaving their eggs on the shaft of the feathers ~

Defiantly lice, got the nits and seen the little buggers crawling all over my birds, ive just spoken to my vet about another poorly chicken that i had sent off for testing, which preliminary results have come back as Mareks, so it seems these lice have brought out a disease i didn't know i had. Feel like giving up and culling the lot :he:he:he:he

Ugh on the Mareks. Sorry to hear that.

Have you tried the pigeon spot on for the lice? Worked a treat on my birds.

I'm gutted re Mareks.

I have bought some Ivermectin but am a bit scared to use it, as its not licensed for chickens i can't really find too much info on administering it, I sound info that says from 1 drop to 4 and edd withdrawal from 1 week to 3. I wont hold you accountable if you share how you administered it! It seems they are all on death row now anyway!!

Hi. I've been having a heck of a time with red mites now the weather has warmed up. I've a system of cleaning, spraying, dusting, repeat at the moment. I only use permethrin. I have treated the birds with ivermectin drops. You can get it from homebargians for about 3-4 pounds for a pack of four. Just put 1-2 pipettes on the neck/back of your bird. I don't have lice on my birds just in the coop.
