Thank you Barbara!

Yes, I’m a native Italian speaker but I’m studying English and German at University. I’ve already been three times in Germany but I’ve never visited UK. I know, that sounds weird.

However my sister has been in Cardiff and London and she had a good time there, specially in Wales. You know…. medieval castles, green pastures, ancient and small cementaries in rural villages in the british countryside…. All of these things are part of the typical British landscape in the popular immagination and she has seen them

Well, Pekins/Cochins also are very popular here. We call them “Cocincina” but I did not know that there is a bantam version of this breed. Orpington is one of my favorite breeds. I like their body shape. I find that they are relaxing to watch.

Yes, I’ve heard that Northern England was historically more industrialised than the South of the country. However I agree, good thing that now it’s all gone. Less pollution and stuff like that. Do you have a farm or it’s just a hobby? How many horses do you have?

I bought the white Australorp eggs that you can see in my photos but only one of them was born. The black ‘Lorp eggs were from my flock. So my intention now is to cross black and white in order to obtain the splash colour because someone told me that if I make this crossbreed twice, then I’ll get the splash one. I’m not sure but I want to try. Twice because white colour is dominant and the chickens resulting from the first attempt should be white with not many black spots. Are you informed on genetics or stuff like that?

Australorp breed can be white, black, blue and splash but the combinations that you can find on Internet are only these ones:

black x black = 100% black
blue x blue = 50% blue - 25% black - 25% splash
splash x splash = 100% splash
black x blue = 50% black - 50% blue
black x spalsh = 100% blue
blue x splash = 50% blue - 50% splash

Your chickens are very lucky. Unfortunately I do not have so much space for my chickens. On the other hand, 47 eggs.... wow! It would have been a waste, if you had not find them

Evening...@CiceroXY I too love Orpington's, unfortunately my lovely Buff just died a few days ago, with help from @rebrascora I think we decided she wasted from Marek's disease...she was literally alive one day and dead the next morning. A wonderful breed that I hopefully will have again in my flock one day. I currently have 26 hens....a real mix of farmyard mutts, egg laying hybrids and pure breeds including Silkies, Thuringian's, Wyandottes, Faverolles, Leghorns, Swedish Flower Hens, Andalucians & Plymouth Rock's.....I like my different colour eggs in my basket! I also have 5 ducks (2 drakes and 3 ducks) an overworked other half and a 12 year old daughter! Sadly, I've lost far too many this year.....chickens that is!!... majority to the fox but many others to disease...it's not been a kind year to me.

We're off to Geneva this Xmas for our break (we try to get away 2/3 times a year if poss) but am looking forward to visiting Italy again really soon.....thanks for the invite!! I too studied German (& French) at A Level (our higher education certificates)...I found it really hard but did well in my finals much to my parents delight!! Good luck with your further studies...Must go and lock up the ducks now, they love to stay up late but I don't....Good night all....Sasha.

Fortunately you have a beautiful flock that needs you

You have so many breeds, congrats! Do you have one rooster and one hen of each breed?

Liguria is a beautiful region. You have made a good choise! Also Cinque Terre is there

I am down to 1 cockerel that we bred last year...he's only a mix (Rhode Island Red x Sussex) as my 2 big boys gave up themselves to the fox. He's not the best cockerel, he warns the girls fairly well but has proved useless at fertilising eggs this season! Just finished cleaning them out, getting messier and messier as they are spending more time inside as our daylight hours reduce....time to do jobs for humans now...boring housework :(

It sounds like foxes are a huge problem in your area! Do you live in the countryside? I've heard about red foxes of England :) here we have the wolves but fortunately not in my area. I too have only one rooster because I do not have much space. So one roo is enough :) He is a black Lorp and weighs around 4 kg. He is nice. Do you use bantam hens or an incubator? Today the weather is cloudy here but it's not raining.

Hi everyone
I'm in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and have a smallish flock in my back garden. I'm somewhat addicted and finding it hard not to keep adding to my flock.

Hi & welcome to thre thread :frow
I too started with just a couple in the garden but they unexpectedly multiplied :lau

Hello again everyone!
Hope you are all well and aren't melting away in the heat today. I am after a bit of advice again if anyone can help. Our other Wyandotte started sneezing and heavy breathing the other day, much like her friend had done before she passed. Luckily our next door neighbour had some antibiotics and offered to give her some for us. Well she is looking a lot better now and is eating and drinking plenty, the only problem is that ever since her injection she can't walk on her left leg, and is hopping. She ran away from us fine after it had been administered, but a few minutes after she started limping and walking on the top of her foot. Could we have damaged something with injecting her? Or is this just a temporary thing? It's been nearly three days now and there aren't any signs of it getting any better. She can't put any weight on it...I can only imagine she is experiencing the equivalent of sciatica almost? My dad thought about splinting it, though I'm not sure that would work.

Hope she is doing better Georgie :fl Barbara left you some fab advice for her :D

Um.. Can I say "Hi", even if I'm not British?   I mean, there are really few Europeans on BYC forum and UK thread is the only one from Europe that has a significant partecipation. Speaking with people from all over the world is amazing but I'd also like to know people that are geographically near to me :D  I'm from Italy and I have got a little flock consisting of Australorp, Isa and Harco chickens.

Hi & welcome to the thread :frow
Lovely birds you have there and Italy sounds fantastic :thumbsup

The enemy! Folk aren't keeping them as pets are they?

No! It was an animal experience tent at a local fair...you got to meet spiders, snakes, meercats, tortoises.......and foxes......uurrgghhh! There were 3 of them, abandoned by the mother and someone kindly rescued them...hmmm..thanks for that!!

We're off to the Midland Game Fair this weekend, must NOT buy more chickens!! Plenty of gun stuff for the O/H. Looking after my Mum & Dad's German Pointer for a week whilst they visit my brother in New York so may have a bash at some of the gundog events to distract me!!
