@rebrascora

Hi Barbara,

I need the proof for myself too! Maybe the pic will spur me on a bit more! You are not a miserable failure at all for not getting out. Quad bikes and horses really do not go together so it was far better not to go. It sure does sound a busy place round you on a weekend. Fingers crossed it will be quiet this week and you can get out and about.

Good going on the tunnel but Ian wanting to commandeer it for himself does not sound good! It will be of far better use growing things in it rather than storing. Did you find a flat place for it? I'm sure the birds will be pleased to get in there :D

Ice and frost again this morning :( Hope the sun makes an appearance soon!

Good luck on the part, fingers crossed they have the right one :fl

Catch you soon

Kim xx

Here you go, I took some more photographs:

This one shows the crafted gate quite well:

And here is what the destroyed bit of lawn looks like now:

A vast improvement even without all the flowers that are yet to come in the Spring!

Aaaww thanks Sasha.

You have given me some great ideas. Bet it looks fantastic in Spring.

Thanks

Hi Yorkshire Coop

Great thanks and hope you are.

Have an outbreak of AF 25 miles away but am being pragmatic about it ha ha.

Glad you finally have the part for your car Barbara.

Hugs to everyone x

Hi Kim

I am hopeful! There is a part on it's way, which the man (a different man from another company) assures me is the correct one. I am reserving judgement until I see it. The good news is that this one is cheaper at £35 incl P&P as oppose to £54 for the other one, so keeping fingers crossed it is the right one as that is 10x less than it would have cost to have it professionally repaired. Let's hope I don't have any aggravation getting a refund for the other one I sent back. It was a glorious day here today but still didn't get MeMe out. I've got a sick pekin pullet with an impacted crop. With all the aggravation trying to get the car sorted I didn't spot it until it's really bad. Her crop is huge but quite squishy and the weight of it is tipping her over. No obvious smell and she still wants to eat, so don't think it is sour and I do feed them some fermented feed, which should prevent that anyway. Thankfully I've been through this before with Portia, so I have some experience of treating it and at least she is still pooping a little. She has lost a huge amount of condition though and her comb is turning purple, so I'm hoping I have caught it in time. She is getting 4 quite intensive massages a day and just liquid feed, but I've had to set to and make yet another cage for her as everything else is in use. She is in the house overnight as she needs warmth but I put her out in the sun today where she could see her pals. Thank goodness the weather has at least been fine. If it was wet or snowy, that would have made things much more difficult.

Went to see the Strictly Tour last night which was a real treat. Had great seats but my hands are sore today from clapping!! Managed to get 2 longer screws for my poly tunnel today so might even get that finished tomorrow if Ian can find time to help me move the frame. I had a rethink on the orientation of it and it needs turning through 180degrees and moving back about 10 yards. It will not be easy with it being so large but better to move it before I cover, it as even a light wind could see the pair of us go sailing off with it once the cover is on.

Must go jump in the shower now and then head up the road to Ian's. Fingers crossed I am a happy bunny tomorrow night with the correct part in my possession!

Best wishes

Barbara

They'll be fine am sure ha ha.

Great bio security and it seems to occur on the same poultry farms.

Hope you are well x

Well, not sure if I am a happy bunny or not yet as regards my car part. It has arrived and it's looking hopeful though. Not an identical part to the one I took off but I think it is close enough to work. Didn't get time to fit it before it got dark, so it will be a job for tomorrow.

Really concerned about my little pullet with the crop issue. It is sour now as well as impacted. I've vomited her a few times today, but just getting a little bit up each time, probably pretty much just the tiny bit of sloppy feed she has eaten. She is so emaciated and her crop is still huge. She is still doing a very occasional normal looking poop...maybe 3-4 small ones a day, so that gives me hope. I really regret putting her outside today as it was too cold. I wanted to keep her in sight of the others to keep her spirits up but she started looking like she was going to give up. Thankfully, having brought her back in the house where it's warm, she has picked up and I've spent a good couple of hours giving her TLC. Seriously considering opening up her crop and physically emptying it. I can't afford a vets bill, especially at the moment. She regurgitated a 4inch long feather last night when I vomited her and if there are more balled up in there, I can't see them coming up or going down, so it may be a question of surgical removal or euthanize.... neither of which I take lightly. At least there aren't any major organs or even much tissue at all between the skin and the crop, so it shouldn't be too risky. Is it even legal to operate on a live bird to save it? I am at least familiar with the physiology through processing the cockerels, so I feel reasonably confident of being able to do it. Arrgh I hate making life or death decisions!

@timon
Didn't you stitch up a chicken a few months back? What type of thread did you use and did you do single stitches and tie them off or a running stitch? I was thinking of soaking whatever thread I use in iodine or maybe just boiling water. Did your hen make a full recovery? Ant tips on holding it still during the procedure etc?

Best wishes to all

I did !! I know it sounds crazy....

I just used regular cotton, and did it like you're stitching a hole in a sock. Used germolene as anti bacterial cream.

I would use a waxy dental floss if I had to do it again. Would be much easier to get the stitches out in a week's time.

Someone held her upside down for me with a towel over her head too. she was walking round the next day - amazing recovery speed.
