:jumpy The 8th annual BYC Hatch a Long! :jumpy

It's that time again! Every year, hundreds of members come together to set eggs to hatch on the exact same day - the day BEFORE Easter. As a group last year, we had 7,491 eggs set for hatching! If you are new to hatching, this is a great way to get a lot of help, tips and advise. Join in the fun for the largest BYC Hatch-a-long of the year!

Hi Kim

Vippy is going from strength to strength thanks and eventually eating a bit of grower now thankfully, although she still wants her scrambled egg too. She is definitely eating with more gusto which makes me happy. She is out in the sunshine in her little cage next to her palls at the moment and could easily go back in with them but she seems intent on eating fibrous material again as soon as she has the opportunity and I really don't want to have to do repeat surgery on her and I can't possibly remove every scrap of straw from the pen particularly whilst they are confined....there just isn't room for me a bag and rake and all of them together, so it looks like I have a house chicken for several more weeks!

Oh Wow! I didn't think Harry could be hyper like that too! He always sounds like such a good lad. At least you know that the company of another horse will calm him down though. With mine it is the opposite and makes them twice as bad. I hope you are able to borrow a steady horse if you can't find someone to go out with you next time.

I'm still resisting setting eggs at the moment. The fact that the eggs that I would have wanted to hatch have dried up for some reason or the hens are in a pen without a cockerel or multiple roosters of the wrong breed, helps me resist temptation, as well as the potential wrath of my sister...eek!. Everything is so chaotic with this lock down and since it has taken so long to settle each pen into a reasonably happy equilibrium, I really don't want to start chopping and changing things now and having them fighting again, just to perhaps get some eggs that are worth hatching. Am I right in thinking the start date for the Easter Hatch a long would be 25th March....judging by my BYC calendar....to hatch for Easter Sat (15the April) or do they aim for the Thurs before Good Friday? That seems a long way off to be planning it just yet! I struggle to look beyond the end of my nose let alone planning a month and a half ahead! I doubt my broody will remain so for that long or that it would be fair to let her do so, but I haven't attempted to break her yet, so I'm probably still hedging my bets.

Must get back out there now and do some more chores whilst the sun is shining. Hope it is shining on you too....we have been so lucky here with the weather compared with the rest of the country in the past few weeks particularly. It's positively hot in my poly tunnel today!

Best wishes

Barbara

I'm in the "Higher Risk Zone"

Oh no!!! Sorry boo x

So sorry to hear you guys are within restricted areas. Huge sigh of relief for me as I'm about a mile outside of one.Phew! That was close although I will still need to maintain the current situation from what I understand....ie confine to bird proof runs and poly tunnel etc. or am I reading it wrong? The way I read it, we still all have to protect our birds from contact with wild birds but can allow onto the land provided it is netted or enclosed and supervised....does that mean standing guard with a blunderbuss to blast any wild bird that comes near?

:(
Think I'm in a high risk area also. The map is not that clear in the PDF file though :/

Hope everyone is doing ok? Been busy over in the hatch a long thread the last few days spurring people on to set eggs!
You know you want to Barbara ;) Set date is 25th March so they hatch the day before Easter Sunday Barbara :D You know so you can be organised ;)

Hope Vippy is still continuing to do well and the gg horses are ok? Been bad again here and not ridden since the spectacle last time. He was a bit stiff the next day and I'm not surprised with all the effort he put in! :gig

Ha ha I hope not! A mile is a very close call.

My poly tunnel became a battered mess after 4 days so that was money well spent!!

I can't bring myself to take it to the tip though as keep thinking I can make use of the bits that are left. Could probably use the cover to roof the run if necessary etc. It hurts too much to tip £109 of poly tunnel so soon ha ha.

Have now bought fence posts and netting etc and my half-term project is to fence off half of my garden in order to allow the other side to recover. Luckily, it is a fair size. This will also allow me to easily attach a cover over the run in light of the prolonged risks, and indeed, of future outbreaks.
It will also allow me to plant vegetables and new plants etc without the little demons eating them ha ha.
In addition, am planning to clean out and whitewash the small coop, ready to adopt some more ex batts when the all clear comes. Phew! Am tired just thinking about it ha ha x

Good luck to everyone - hopefully freedom is nearby

Hi all...please excuse my dumbness..I'm confused! If I put my postcode in the map, it is just clear..no colours. Does that mean I'm okay? The "interactive" map is not very user friendly but then again I'm not tech savvy at all!! Can I let my lot out soon??? They are climbing the walls!!! Any help greatly appreciated! Sasha xx

My understanding of it is that if you dont have colour over you on the map you are ok. Then again I may be being extra blonde today :idunno
