just candled them all to see which ones are duds I have 29 quail out of 36, 4 out of 6 silkies and I'm still giving my runners more time they all have little heartbeats so I'll have to wait and see. Aww that's so sweet that you hatched them that's what my plan is! It's so interesting to see them growThat's great that you another incubator
Your runner eggs could have misshapen/saddle air sacs due to the postal system. They can still hatch ok though. Did you give them 24 hours rest before you set them? Did you start turning them straight away? Are they on their sides incubating or set upright with the fat end up?
Polish are real characters! Can be quirky little birds but I hatched and raised mine so they have always been handled and are used to being picked up. This is handy as they need their eyes and crests checking regularly. They make great lap chickens and like to sit with you, chatty little things also. My WCB polish do scream for attention though which can be a pain as they are pretty loud :/

@everyone else
Many thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes a while back. I tried to respond but kept having broadband connection problems.
Those of you who were following my story of Vippy and her crop surgery will be delighted to know that she has been back in the pen with her palls for a couple of weeks now and started laying 2 weeks post surgery and is near the top of the pecking order and looking extremely well. I have let them out for the first time since the flu restrictions onto the grass for a couple of hours in the sunshine and they are really enjoying it.
There has been an outbreak of flu about 15 miles from me just a week ago and I have been maintaining restrictions despite not being in a designated area, but the weather was too good today to keep them in and I'm legally entitled to let them out now, but doubt I will do so every day, to reduce the risk, especially since I am not always here to supervise.
Anyway, I just wanted to update everyone and also to say to Paula how very sorry I was to hear that your silkie didn't make it especially after all your efforts. At least Jackie had one more day back with the others being a proper chicken before the end came and is now no longer suffering. You really could not have done any more to help.
Best wishes
Barbara
Hi again Sarah and welcome to the threadHi! I'm Sarah from West Sussex, we purchased our first 4 hens in June 2016 and purchasing 5 nine week chicks this weekendHere is a picture of our three beauties Dory, Nugget, and Dorothy. Sadly we lost one because she was egg bound, her name was Hetty. They are very friendly and love our company. Every time we walk out the front door of our house they run to their gate to greet us. Hopefully when we eventually bring our newbies and them together they will become good friends!
