Has anyone successfully found mealworms at a cheap(er) price? Where do you all get your meal worms from? I currently buy them from wilkos at £5 for 500g and my ducks are going through them fast!!

I've looked on Amazon but not really finding anything cheaper.

If you are talking about dried ones, I thought those are illegal to feed to poultry (link). I know there is a good bucket deal at B&M. I only buy live ones though.

@Nethielka I've never heard of that ban, so I looked it up and somewhere on an old website it said there is a ban but they are currently discussing unbanning it. I guess ya learn something new everyday lol!

I dont buy mealworms, I guess I let the chickens look for bugs when they freerange, but I read somewhere not to get dried (or wild bird) mealworms for chickens. But I know that you can get fresh ones in pets at home.

My ducks free range but get meal worms as a treat. So handy having bug eaters in the backyard! :) Mealworms as a treat do no harm to chickens or ducks (from my experience). Not too sure I want to try the live ones but may have a go haha!.[/QUOTE]

Apparently, and I might be wrong, but I heard that imported dried mealwoms are fed and grown on faeces.

When my kitchen door is open my chickens get drawn to the cat food dish and seem to pinch some of the food, I dont mind them having a nibble at it, but am hesitant that its not for chickens so I steer them away after a minute or two.. What I have got is Garvo chicken treats which is also full of protein, its expensive but I give them a small handful now and then. The protein is amphoids or something, a type of small fish.

I used to feed mine mealworms as a treat. I read a article somewhere (can't remember where. I'll try and find it) that it is illegal to feed them dried mealworms because they are fed on animal offal ( guts and suchlike) and the risk of the mealworms being contaminated with diseases led to the ban. Remember BSE? Seems a bit harsh but it's all about risk. You can grow your own but the return you get for how much effort involved maybe not worth it. Have you ever got live crickets for reptiles and chucked a few of them in? Wow!!
