timon - you may need to provide some shade for them till they regrow feathers - I imagine they could get sun burn, too bad they couldn't have little hen aprons to protect their bare skin and make them feel cozy till they look like chickens again. Thank you for taking them in. They will bring you much pleasure when they settle in and bloom under your tutelage.

Will they move under the shade themselves if there is some?
There is a hedge all along one side of the run which provides some shade... but will they know they're getting sunburnt and use it?
Or should I put shade over all the run so they don't get any sun?

Morning Barbara, sorry to hear about your pullet That's such a shame she was not able to pull through this and I totally get what you mean about it being hard to put them down when they are sick compared to a healthy cockerel. It's so hard to make that decision to end their suffering with your head and heart being pulled in all direction. I always have that thought that maybe another day and they wil make improvements untill your head takes over and makes you realise what's best for the bird. I seem to have no trouble with evil little cockerels though, like that last Pekin one. It's final terrorising act was the last straw. I grabbed it, Charlie got his gun and that was it. One shot and it was gone. I didn't feel a thing only that it had what was coming to it after the horrors it had put all the others through. I seem to be having the same trouble with another lavender one that's out in the shed. Have you had trouble with any of your Pekin cockerels? It seems they have a real chip on their shoulder and just can't leave the others alone

Hope things continue to go ok with your hatch, more chicks Sounds like Zak is going ok , great he jumped the log again! Fingers crossed he does not find the hand brake again! Still not been out on Harry horse Just been busy busy with one thing and another, I really need to make the effort though while the weather is half decent.

If they have some shade they should know to head for it if they get too hot. Some sun will do them good, lots of goodness to be gained for some sun on their back!

Thanks....I do love them. They'll all be staying regardless of their gender. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they crow or lay! I also have the 2 Thuringian's, I'm pretty sure i have 1 boy (the comb is significantly larger) and 1 girl, new breed to me but gosh, they're super friendly, I'd recommend them to anyone who wants a "lapdog" chicken!

I know you are a clever bunch, so hopefully you can help... One of my new rescue hens has not been very active today. I noticed she's the only one not venturing outside. She is just sitting in the nest box, and her eyes keep closing like she's going to sleep. She also has white foam-like discharge coming from her butt.
I've done some reading, and it sounds like a yeast infection.... But idk.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I have already separated her from everyone else.

Sounds like she is starting with vent gleet. This is more than likely due to change in her environment and feed upsetting her digestive system.

That's what I had seen... It's a good article.
I only have malt vinegar in my kitchen, not apple cider vinegar... Will it hurt to give her some water with malt vinegar in it?

Natural yogurt is quite useful too. I've treated a few yeast infections this way, they hate it to start with but ravage it down if you add some mealworms or other tasty treat to it. Good luck with her. ACV is widely available, I don't think normal malt vinegar will do much though.

I agree that you can give them the normal vinegar but it does not have as many benefits as the apple cider vinegar. Most feed shops have ACV in and of not there is always Amazon

Should I try to get some acv inside her before she goes to sleep tonight? It's getting dark, and she's already half asleep.... Not sure what I can actually do to get any 'normal' food inside her....

Is there a risk she won't make it through the night?
