If she is already settled for the night I would leave her be if she was mine. You could try wetting her normal feed into a mash to encourage her to eat it. Also scrambled and or hard boiled egg is great for getting them eating.

I'm afraid I can't say she will or won't make it through the night. It really does depend how much fight she has in her and just how poorly she is. They have a great way of concealing illness from us. If the symptoms have only just begun I would say she has a good chance as you will have caught it soon.

@Yorkshire Coop

I have a mature black silkie who is now "stargazing" the poor love...I'm assuming wry neck? What vitamin solutions would you suggest? I've got a variety but none seem to have any selenium in, only the vitamin e content. I wonder if you have experience with a more thorough brand? I understand tuna is good for selenium but as she's only a small Silkie, I'm concerned she may not ingest enough. Poor soul, she is a diamond and has only suddenly come down with this (I'm getting fed up of all these problems.....one after another it seems with me lately).

@timon

Good luck with your hen, I would also leave her settled this evening and get the ACV in the water in the morning and get some natural yogurt in her too. Fingers crossed she'll be fine and just adjusting to her new environment....these flippin' chickens are hard work!!

Oh dear @Rudies Roost :hugs
I've found abidec works well but it does not have the selenium in so give tuna with it. You can get vitamin E and selenium capsules from Holland and Barret health food shop or similar places.

Could she have been pecked on the head by one of the others? Wry neck can also be caused by a brain injury. Especially silkies and polish as they have a vaulted skull which makes part of the brain exposed.

Sorry your having so much trouble at the moment, it seems these things all happen at once :hugs

timon - you may need to provide some shade for them till they regrow feathers - I imagine they could get sun burn, too bad they couldn't have little hen aprons to protect their bare skin
Good point, I use childrens factor 50 sun block on my featherless when I got them. I'm not sure it tasted good as they were preening but it did at least stop them from getting roast. And if/when they go in with any older birds some gentian violet on any bald areas to stop them getting pecked. Because we love purple hens.

@Yorkshirecoop

Thank you, you're a star. I reckon its the cockerel, he's twice the size of her and quite amorous with her so I think he may have grabbed her head/neck a little too roughly. I have some Baytril left over from my duck's treatment a while back so I've given her a drop of that-do you know if it has any effectiveness? I'm going to try and get some further tuna down her tomorrow though she's never the biggest eater so she may not take enough on board for it to work. If she's struggling, I'll get to Holland & Barret and get some selenium. These birds are so testing....I think one of the young chicks has a touch of Mycoplasma now too...a distinct bubbly eye, I'm out of Tylan now so it'll have to fight it's own battle with some ACV to hopefully help. Oh Lord above!!

The Baytril won't help for wry neck as its caused by injury or vit deficiency and not bacteria/infection. I can see no reason why the Selenavite E supplement won't work especially if you already have some in. Just check it does not have iron in it. Too much much iron can cause a build up of it in their liver which is not good for them.

Another treatment can be "Prednisone" which is a steroid that you can only get from the vet but if you have some in you could try that with caution. I'm not sure on dosage as I never gave it before but it can reduce the inflammation in the brain. A search will bring you some threads up. Let me know if you want to give that a try as I have prednisone in and could send you some. It will only work though if the wry neck is caused by injury and not deficiency.

Good morning @Yorkshirecoop, well she's been ok overnight and has gone out with the flock this morning as she was throwing herself up the isolation cage to get out...I was worried she'd do more damage! She can still eat and has had a drink, the neck is a touch better, not so "stargazing". I've ordered a small bottle of liquid selenium which I hope will arrive really soon. I don't have the Prednisone you mentioned, if you think it's worth a try, I'll be tempted to have a little off you if you don't mind. I def didn't see any definite trauma to the head but if it's that soft up there then there is a chance the naughty cockerel has damaged it accidentally. Many thanks again for all your help xx
