Just a quick update, Rosemary’s still doing well on her own.
She’s probably going to continue to come in at night, if it’s late and I’ve not collected her she appears at the kitchen window waiting for entry to the kitchen.
One of the other reasons for not getting any more rescues yet is she might teach them bad habits, back in the day it was only once in a blue moon that there was an egg crime, now it seems to be a regular occurrence. Today she’s got bright orange yolk on her feet and face and still looks at me like -wasn’t me.
I’m worried about biosecurity with taking her on holiday for a few days, she’d be in the camper van in her crate so wouldn’t be in contact with wild birds or other farm animals but I don’t think defra would approve all the same.

Aww that's so nice! I'd love to take my hens on holiday. I think they'd be a bit unruly though! It's best if you can break the habit of egg eating though. It can be quite difficult. The best way is getting the egg from her when she lays but if your not watching her ALL the time it's hard to know when she lays. Is she getting enough protein in her diet? Boiled and chopped egg is good. And not to many treats! I know what these house hens are like. Sitting on the sofa watching TV with you and a big bowl of popcorn!

Thanks for the replies
It seems if I confiscate the egg soon enough everything is ok but if left for a couple of hours it’s gone. Had chips for lunch, Rosemary’s only allowed one chip, she’d eat the whole portion otherwise. Then there’s the problem of beak cleaning

If you can get the egg soon enough, hopefully that will break the cycle of egg eating.
I absolutely love this. Hearing how rosemary live with you. She is such a lucky hen. I'm a little envious because I have one or two hens that I would love to live in the house with me. But I know mine are better outside with the rest. I'm interested to know how you keep her. Does she have a nesting box somewhere? Does she sleep in a cage? Does she like countryfile?! Does she just wander around the house and garden? I already know she goes on holiday with you! I just think this is great! You could start a whole thread dedicated to your capers!

My oldest quail just died. Now I only have 4. I'm expecting the last of my original hens, jemima, to die soon too. She's been holding on. And my cuckoo maran lottie, who has been struggling to walk for some time, has now decided not to walk at all. Not a great day. This is the bad part of having animals.

Sorry for your loss, know just how much it hurts when they pass. I’d not be a good farmer.
Rosemary’s out in the garden in the day. In the evening she has a large crate with food, water and a bed of wood shavings. it’s outdoors in the day, come the evening she sit’s in there and waits for me to bring it inside. Until lights out the crate door is open and she can wander, then she’s shut in for the night otherwise there’s a hell of a mess in the morning.

Sorry for your losses - it can be hard at times. You do the best you can :hugs

Thankyou. Jemima is holding on. She's still with us this morning. I know loss is inevitable but I find it hard.
