A very urgent job in my coop is a nesting box - they are currently using 2 plastic tubs but they need the floor space - I'm going to just do a big communal one for them for that very reason!

They will probably still want to be in the same corner! I really do wonder what must go through a chickens brain sometimes!

This is why I had trouble when that hen decided to go broody! They all wanted to be in there with her but she didn’t want them in! No wonder everyone was upset

I thought maybe I'd been kicked off the alert system for this thread (seems to happen to me ). I'm good thanks, have 2 silkies now gone broody for the second time so have some Cream legbar and marans eggs under them! Due September 3rd. I sadly lost my Australorp pullet (3 months) over the weekend, no idea how she died, only signs of anythign was some missing feathers from the back of her neck (found about 3m away from her). Only thing I can think of is one of the young cockerels tried to mount her and she panicked and had a heart attack she was pretty flighty / scared so maybe. i'll never know but all the others are looking fine. Particularly enjoying watching my young Orp splash mix cockerel - he is just looking more and more gorgeous every day and his tail feathers are getting longer and looking like they will be amazing! He looks like someone has splattered him with black paint - love him (says me who at the beginning of the hatching adventure was going to send all cockerels to freezer camp!!).

Sorry to hear about your pullet That is strange her just seeming to drop down. Not a predator then that may have got spooked and dropped her? Then again I had a tolbunt Polish pullet that seeming just died a while back. No symptoms previously and I found her dead in the nest box. Very disappointing as she was my only tolbunt pullet after the breeder ripped me off with the so called “Tolbunt” hatching eggs.

Your splash cockerel sounds a neat bird! I love a mix of colours on chickens! Think that’s why I like Tolbunt polish

Thank you - I know it is really odd, I tried to look as best I could and couldnt' see any obvious bite marks etc just the missing feathers. The only thing that kind of suggests it coudl have been something was she was right on the fence line so if something had dragged her and realised it couldn't get her through the fence? I dont' know - I thought that was a possibility and maybe a mink but after reading the article on here it doesn't seem like it was - no throat marks or anything.

awww bless her. Annoying when they are your only one too! I was looking forward tot he good winter laying of the Australorp!

No not yet, the first lot are 2 roosters of the 3, my gorgeous King Louis (named by my son Louis ) and a wonderful pure white Aruacana who I'd hate to see in the pot, he is magnificent! I'd really like to get some easter eggers so thinking as they seem to get on so well (so far!) I will try to keep both of them as his blue genes will obviously be important. The 2nd lot I was lucky and had 4/5 pullets (1 being the Australorp ) so have only 1 roo - he is a very calm Blue Orpington and they are pretty rare here so hoping I may be able to sell him or even give away. Again, no issues so far (he is only 3 months though). The youngest lot are only about 2 months now I think and not sure what I have - someone on the daily egg thread (spartan22 I think) said that my copper marans looks like a boy but we will see! I need to spend some more time down there if it ever cools off and get some pics and work out what they are. I'm hoping as I'm mainly doing 'breeds' many of which are hard to come by that I have some chance of rehoming them.

All is good here in the US, been bust with my Breda chicks. I have a couple that next 'special care' as they are quite weak. The problem with Bredas is their gene pool is quite shallow, so health wise they can be less than robust to start with.
Hoping they pull through...
