Hi Anna & welcome to the thread!
Sounds like you are really enjoying your birds. Lovely to hear BYC has been so helpful for you.
Do you keep any other pets?
Thank you :)
You are right about my enjoying my birds, I love everything about them. I don't have any other pets, I used to keep budgies, have had cats, chinchilla's and dogs in the past too, but decided some time ago to be pet free but then my daughter got the chickens and ducks, which I have taken over because of unforeseeable circumstances meant she could no longer keep them - Now I have them I'd never be without them, they have totally won my heart.
How about you, what pets do you have?

Thank you :)

That’s very kind of you to take over the birds from your daughter. Often those are the best kind of pets, the unexpected ones!

I have ~ 12 chickens. 8 polish, 3 ex commercial hens & 1 polish frizzle x amber link.
7 quail. 3 cortunix & 4 Harlequin.
2 dogs. An old terrier Called Mac. My son has a year old sprocker spaniel called Keeper.
3 cats. 2 at home and one at the stables.
And not forgetting Harry horse! A 22 year old thoroughbred who was a surprise birthday present from my other half 15 years ago.

Awwww wow, what a wonderful surprise gift! And a lovely variety of chicken breeds too.
I have 2 Rhode Island Red x Legbar, 1 Light Sussex and 1 Buff Orpington and my ducks are, 2 Indian Runner and 2 Khaki Campbell x Runner :)

:frow Bright eyed & bushy tailed for a Saturday morning?
NO that is why I couldn't even manage a hello just a wave :lau:lau:lau We had a crazy busy day Friday with a big trip to the DIY shop. Then went to bed too late, I probably had too much wine (Friday night is always home made pizzas and wine at our house!) then my 3 yo who is annoyingly still in our room (long story short we are renovating an old barn in France so he hasn't got a room yet!) woke me in the night coughing then decided to wake just after 6 - seriously :eek:on the first day of the holidays - on school days I have to wake him when the alarm goes at 7.30! Then had a crazy day running DS2 to rugby, shopping, walnut harvesting, gardening etc yesterday so didn't get a chance to come back on and explain my short post :lau. On the upside the weather is just incredible here so we had a BBQ last night :eek:Really it is the last 1/3 of October!!!!!!
my name is Anna, I am 55 years old and I live in Ipswich, Suffolk. I am new to poultry keeping but am loving the experience, we have four beautiful chickens and for beautiful ducks
Hi Anna and welcome :frow:welcome
have had fantastic responses to help questions I've posted and been helped no end by the lovely members of BYC
Blows me away how lovely and helpful everyone is!

Another stunning day here so I'm going to get out in the garden and work out where to put in the onions and garlics (thinking which area can be easiest blocked off from the chickens :lau). Have lovely Sundays everyone!

Wow, you are very very busy, great that you are having nice weather, where I am the weather is exceptionally warm for this time of year and I'm hoping it will lead to a mild winter this year.
Thank you for the welcome :)

Best Birthday present ever! Nice breeds there. I’d love some ducks but they are just too messy for me. Would seriously interfere with my bizarre OCD on being tidy
Plus I’m not sure Keeper the spaniel would understand that ducks in the garden don’t need retrieving! He’s a working gun dog so stopping him getting them might be confusing for him!

Sounds like you are a busy bee! Tell me about with kids! Charlie is nearly 17 and I still struggle to get him out of bed for college :( Holidays or if he’s going out shooting, beating or to help the game keeper & he’s up about ready to go!

See I'm worried it will turn around and bite us on the bum! I have this feeling that we may be in for a cold one! I'm probably 900km south of you and we are only just now going into single figures overnight, usually we are heating at least in the evenings from 1st week of October!
I’d love some ducks but they are just too messy for me.
I feel the same way!

LOL I'm actually pretty lucky - Josh my 17 YO gets picked up at 7.10 and gets himself up and out (I don't get up unless R is already awake as apparently I get in his way :lau). It's the getting him out of his room on weekends / holidays to help us on the house that doesn't work as well!

Many people are saying they think we will get a harsh winter because of this mild weather , I just hope not. Or if we do, I hope it won't last long - I really hate the winters that seem to drag on forever
My daughter is 26 now but I remember those days of practically having to drag her out of bed on school mornings but on holidays me thinking I'll get the odd lie in but noooooo she'd wake at the crack of dawn full of energy. She now has a son of her own and one on the way so is only a matter of time until the tables turn lol.
