UK Members Please Say HI

Well I'll leave it a week or so and see how they get on. You can spot the hens though because as soon as they get in the hay all the harlequins riddle in amongst their feathers and the hens put up with it!
They are lovely dogs proper little characters, he dreams about running

Just gradually put them out there so they get used to it I put mine out for a couple of hours at first then all day then a day and night and now they live out there permanently which they love. You should try and hatch some button quail you wouldn't believe how small they are!! The eggs are like maltesers lol. Hopefully he will be running soon! My jack Russell loves baby animals he licks the chicks and grooms my cats bless him

@Tomo ov gy

Hi and welcome and congratulations on your first eggs.....aren't they so thrilling, like some miracle!
What breeds do you have? Are you planning to get more or do you think you will manage to limit yourself to just two chickens (good luck with that!!) There is something called Chicken Maths that means you start out with just 2 or 3 and end up with considerably more.... it's almost impossible to prevent.... subtraction is infinitely more difficult than addition and multiplication in Chicken Maths and division (into breeding pens) usually just leads to more multiplication....it's a strange and compelling science.

Anyway, good luck with your girls and I hope there are many more eggs to come for you.

Please feel free to ask any questions or problems you get stuck with.

Regards

Barbara

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who offered their sympathies regarding Vippy. Still feeling pretty sad about her....much more so than the little bantam cockerel that I lost to a fox last week, but then Vippy was special.

Having a hard time keeping them all in again. I let them out for a few hours yesterday afternoon whilst I was working in the garden but the moment I hear one of the cockerels raise the alarm, I'm panic stricken and usually it is just because one of the other cockerels is mating a hen or the two cockerels in the grown out pen are fighting. I was out of the poly tunnel like a rocket several times for false alarms, but it is no life for them being penned up when they are used to more room. especially when they have had all winter penned up. I tracked the fox via a feather trail onto my neighbours land, but since we are not on good terms, I can't exactly get someone with terriers to come down and trespass with me to deal with it and my neighbour has refused permission before, even though they have lost chickens to a fox in the past. It's a very isolated overgrown patch of land and he would probably not even know we had been on, but it would be my luck to get caught in the act and he is very keen on taking people to court, so not worth the risk. I might need to purchase a trap and see if I can catch it that way. It has to be feeding young, so the problem is only going to get worse. Thankfully my rat problem seems to have reduced....you never really clear them... but I'll settle for keeping on top of the problem.... and the jackdaws seem to have stopped helping themselves to my eggs too. although I have only managed to catch 2 in the Larson trap I borrowed out of the thirty or forty that are knocking about. Starting to see the resurgence of red mites in my little banty coop that had problems with them last year, so I had the creosote out yesterday and gave the cracks and crevices and roost ends a good dousing including a large cluster of them under the opening part of the roof. I doubt they will survive a creosote bath but I am half expecting to have lavender and brown pekins!

Think that is all my news for now. I have been trying not to look at all the photos of chicks that you lucky people have been hatching. I really am overstocked and need to reduce, so the combination of my pathetic broody pekins desperate to hatch eggs and your gorgeous chick photos,have been nearly more than I could bear. I'm still standing firm for now though! Wishing those of you with eggs still cooking and those with chicks lots of luck though and I'm pretty desperately envious, but I really need to rein in my chicken addiction.

Best wishes

Barbara

@rebrascora

I'm sorry you are still sad about Vippy :hugs Special ones are always hard to get over :( You really did do all you could for her and it sounded like it was always going to be a recurring problem for her. I hope you don't stay sad for too long :hugs

:somad on the fox! I need to send Charlie up to you for a few days! He had another one on Monday, a dog.

They seem to be rife round here at the moment and listening to them on a night worries me :/ Could you get some one to come and sit out at yours and wait for it? Such a shame on your birds being cooped up because of the things but I know just what you mean about panic stations when you hear a cafuffle outside!

Your impressing me with your resolve on no more chicks! You are doing fantastic on stopping yourself! I have tried to stop but only have the 10 Brahma in the shed and the 9 goose eggs in the incubator but any goslings that hatch will go back to the farm they came from. So not too bad really for me and to be quite honest I just don't have the time right now for more with one thing and another. On another note I did get out on Harry yesterday, thank god he does not mind having a break as it's been 5 weeks since I last rode and the same for his field Branon who we went with. They were both good and we only had a bit of trouble going past the cricket field as a match was going on but not too bad :D As it's lighter now on a night I'm hoping to get some evening riding in :fl
Hope you have managed to get out and about on yours?

BYC is going on to read only mode on Monday or Tuesday because of the conversion so if you or anyone else fancies chatting I will be on backyard herds ~ http://www.backyardherds.com/ I could start a UK thread there?
They have added a chicken section for the conversion as it could be 3 days + until it's all done.

If I don't catch you before or during the big change over have a fab week Barbara!

Kim xx
