Well, looks like I've been gone for ages - congratulations on all the hatches, sorry for losses and welcome to new members!
Keeping busy here - my Breda chicks arrived beginning of May - all still alive and looking good.
Lost a couple of older ladies - they were only 4yrs tho'. My real old ladies (8yrs) are hanging in there enjoying retirement.
Someone mentioned broodies? I currently have 6 broodies - 2 have hatched single chicks so far. I don't mind them being broody right now we have an egg mountain....View attachment 1425839

Looks good! Seems you are getting quite a few new members of your own! I've had three broodies this past week. Unfortunately I've had to break them. My two brahmas have both been done and when I get home there will be another shift change for a whitestar of all things! There not all that common for broodiness being a hybrid. Are you looking at hatching more?

Yes - not fussed about what hatches from the 'barnyard collection', but by the end of this year all my blue/black/splash Breda fowl will be 'of age', so I intend to start hatching some of those for sure.

Yeah. And the catastrophic week I have had continues with the brooder bulb deciding to kick the bucket, taking our freezer with it. Said freezer contains my wedding cake.

Our fridge freezer packed up too on Saturday! Apparently Charlie went in there Saturday morning and it looked funny in there but he didn’t say anything! I went in at 4.30 in the afternoon and it was completely defrosted with water flooding out of the bottom. If he’d said something earlier some of the food could have been saved but by the afternoon it all had to go in the bin.
Will you be able to salvage your cake?

I hope so. I have replaced the cord so hopefully it didn't manage to defrost in the 10 hours it was not on. 6 quail chicks have hatched so far out of 14 eggs so I'm hoping for some more later.

Hi. Nice to see you here. You've definitely not had a good start with your hens. Thats a near vertical learning curve! Hopefully things will start looking up for you now. I guess you will now have your run and coop rat proofed or are you using bait? A friend of mine recently lost 27 hens and ducks to a dog. He was devastated and was going to throw the towel in but he's since put up better fencing and gates. So hopefully they'll be alot more protected now. I don't think you should have too many problems introducing 1 hen to 1 hen. You should maybe keep them separate for a while to see each other but not come into contact and too observe your new hen for illnesses. What chickens are you getting?
