I received a gift from an Ecuadorian pastor of a baby chicken. I was completely unprepared but very excited (I have always wanted a chicken).

When the chick was delivered to me, it was also delivered with a bag of food. My husband took the food while I oohed and awed over the chicken. Later, when I went to feed my new chicken, I asked my husband where the food was.

I was told it was in the laundry shed, on the shelf.

I looked everywhere for it and finally found a bag of ground powder. It was in a clean paint bucket.

"Why did you put it in a paint bucket?" I asked
"I didn't." he replied. "They must have brought it in a paint bucket."
"I don't remember seeing it in a paint bucket." I said.
He just shrugged his shoulders.

Just to be safe, I tasted the powder. It was awfully bland and chalky but seemed like it could be food for a baby chick. So for the last four days I have been feeding it to my little "Macintosh". Macintosh never seemed to care for it and last night she cried all night.

THis morning I went to get something from the laundry shed, moved some things around and saw a bag of ground yellow stuff. I tasted it. CORN! Oh crud. What was that other stuff?

Plaster. I have been feeding my chick plaster for FOUR days.

She seems okay, ate a ton of corn when I put it down for her. I think she has survived the last few days on the bugs she pecks at here and there. Good grief, this is NOT a good start.

You really need to get some chick starter.. You chick will not thrive and may not survive on corn.. Chicks cannot grind the corn in their crops so could literraly choke to death on it.. if you doint have chick starter scramble some eggs and feed that until you can get starter.. Also i would get the baby some grit ASAP so it alteast has a chance to grind up the corn in its crop..

I agree with CoopCrazy. Chick starter has far more digestible nutrition than corn.

So glad your chick survived. Maybe you should call it Paris (after Plaster of Paris)...

That is soo something that I would do. ((hugs))

I hope Paris feels better! Now....go get her some real chicky food!

I'm probably alot older than you but, I pull stunts like that several times a day. I'm hoping it's lack of sleep (insomniac) and not dementia. Younger people have "oops" moments occasionally. Hope your little chick will be just fine.

The ground corn IS chicken starter here (I am in Ecuador). Basically the chickens survive just like the people do- however they can. I think this means the chickens are heartier here as this one has survived 50 degree nights and being fed plaster for 4 days.

I think I am going to have to change her name. Plaster is perfect!

PS. My husband is asking around today about the food, just in case there is another option. I have seen dog food here (no cat food) so maybe there is something besides the ground corn I was given.

i am surprised the chick is still standing after four days of plaster...glad you got it figured out. I like Paris too.

i guessed the chick got plastered...
