Un-attached aircells

I just got two batches of eggs from 2 BYC sellers that had air bubbles in them.

I set them anyway, we'll see what happens.

One set were packaged not so great, though. I can still hope.

I have shipped eggs on day eight. They were really beat up in the mail with 2 broken and one cracked. Only four of 15 are growing. All of their air sacs were loose, broken or had air bubbles

Two of the 4 that are growing had loose air sacs, 1 a broken air sac and 1 with bubbles!! So there is hope. Whether they make it through hatch is another story~ like don't count your chickens before they hatch!!

GOOD LUCK!

I have 1 pip out of the 2 eggs! Which really surprises me because they were due yesterday, so when I pulled out the hatched keets last night I candled quickly. Both eggs had movement but looked like they still needed a few days. I didn't expect pips till the weekend.

I made a "window" in the large end of one of the eggs and put a small piece of clear tape over it so that I could watch. I have done this before with no ill effects. What it looks like is that when the chick breaks the membrane, it does not begin breathing immediately. It takes a breath, then pauses awhile before taking another breath. The pauses come fewer and further apart until breathing is regular. I had a good view of the beak last night and then the chick turned to the side of the shell. I would imagine pipping will begin any time. If I recall correctly, I set them late Friday night on the 8th so tonight is the night. I will be sure and take some photos. Good luck back at you. This has been fun.

I started out with 13. All but one made it to at least day 10. I think four will hatch. Every single one had a loose air sac and a couple were broken. Those were the first ones to go.

Two more eggs are dead so I am down to two. I am certain those are because of detached air cells and not an incubation problem. I will be lucky if I hatch one at this point.

Disaster! ALL chicks are dead in the shell. A couple pipped and died but it was not because of the detached air cells. Because the eggs were in the cartons with the large end up, they were near the vent holes where the fan draws in cool air from outside. I decided to take a temperature reading there and it was only about 97-98*. It did not help that the eggs were large and super long. I had the probe attached to a Silkie egg that was laying on its side. I got 100% hatch out of the Silkie eggs that were set two days earlier. So, I hope others can learn from my mistake. If you decide to do the egg cartons be sure you take a new temperature reading around the TOP of the eggs. Especially if they are large eggs. I may be able to save the eggs that I set on the 24th. I think I will just go ahead and lay them down as they are large eggs and there is going to be too much of an extreme in temperature from top to bottom.

Both of mine died too. The aircells were pretty big on both of them. It seems to me that even though humidity was good (and the other eggs they were in the bator with have normal sized aircells) the aircells were really big. Like since they weren't attached they got to be the size of the loose part. I hope I explained that right. lol I did have them laying on their side for hatch though, and my temp was a steady 99.5 forced air.

Anyway, I'm sorry yours didn't make it either redcatcher

I am sorry to hear yours did not make it either. At least we are in good company

. These chicks had all of the signs of low temperatures so that made me decide to check the temperatures where the large ends of the eggs were. The chicks were sticky with huge unabsorbed yolk sacs. Some broke through the air cell and were breathing, and in a good position to hatch, but died.
