Unabsorbed yolk sac

Hey, good for you, the chick angels are watching over you. I watched a painful death after perking up. Glad to hear there is hope. I will never hatch eggs again after seeing that. For me, leaving is the sanest thing to do, I am worrying, watching, freaking out if one peeps to much, blah blah blah blah.
You have happy hatching and I am so glad I was wrong! Nature does have its cruel moments.

Seems to be doing okay. I have the mothers, 2 chicks and the eggs in a cage now where no one can get them. I hate learning from mistakes! I just hope that baby makes it after all it has been through.

Great news!!! The baby, Darth Maul, is doing fantastic! His head wound has sealed up nicely, he is full of energy and eating and drinking like a big boy! I know we are not out of the woods, but I am starting to have a little hope of this baby surviving. Thanks everyone for advice!

Don't be confused between the actual yolk sak and the mucky wet membrane lining that sometimes pulls out of the shell with the chick. Perhaps it is more noticable when geese hatch because they are so much bigger. If it looks like a tiny umbilical cord coming from the chick and a small blob of messy membrane at the other end I would have to say it is NOt the yolk sac.

If the thread sizes stringy 'cord' is dry and it is dragging muck behind it you can nip it off as far away from the chick as possible. Don't clip close to the chick or it could bleed out. Don't let the other chicks peck at it or pull it either.

MissPrissy, thank you! Inside the shell was a wet gross blob, that I assumed was the yolk sac and the cord was wet and bleeding, but I stopped it quickly. I am so pleased with his progress and have hope now. Thanks for clearing up my confusion about the yolk sac.
