Unanswered posts.

I hear you and there are some other things that bother me but I do not want to say them because I will be in trouble and that is not what i want.

As to the unanswered thing I have posted times before and by the time I look at it to make sure it is alright it is already off the recent list. There are however many things that I do not answer to so I can see how some do not get answered as well.

I too was shocked about the bumping thing. I've never heard of it either. My husband is a moderator of a forum of 10,000 + and bumping is common there, other people even bump your unanswered posts here.

I agree that that rule should be reconsidered. If 4 or 5 hours go by and you have a hatching question, or a question you'd like answered before you have to go to work, or something, I believe it should be allowed.

Now, if you are trying to sell something, or some some silly post that you bump every 10 minutes, then yeah, get a warning for that.

The rules on this are pretty clear.

Additionally, Silkiechicken said above
If you respond to your post more than a day later, chances are nobody is going to make a fuss. If you respond to your post every 5-30 minutes, then it becomes an issue.
If you respond to your post on selling an item within about 24 hours, or just saying "look at my chicks" that can be a problem, while if you respond to an emergency post 2-3 hours after you posted, and it really is an emergency like injury where time is important it can be excusable.
It is a very fine line to what is acceptable and what is not.

The problem of reposts isn't so much a repost a few days later if your first post rolled to the bottom, but largly the same question that is posted in every forum sub section, or the same poster posting the same question multiple times under different titles.

Once again it is kind of a fine line. If you can find your old post on the first two or three pages, chances are, you probably shouldn't be dong a repost yet if you haven't had a response. If it's on the 4th or greater page, nobody's going to notice it if you post again and the same question wont be cluttering up the first few pages.

Remember, when you bump your post because you feel someone should have answered you, you are knocking everyone else who just posted down a notch.
It is unrealistic to expect that with 600,000 posts here that all are going to be answered.

I dont think posts need to be bumped, for the simple reason that each time a person comes back to a forum, say the Buying and Selling forum, every post that hasnt been read by me has a chickie by it, and is in dark lettering, so I know exactly what I need to read and what Ive already read. So everyone has a chance to read each new post...if they want to. Bumping a post up, either one looking for info, or ones offering items for sale, is irritating to me. A new post doesnt have to be at the top for me to read it...if its unread, Ill read it, if Im interested in it.

Great responses, especially since I was just making an observation.

I like many others have noticed the same question being posted many times by different people. When I have a question I try to read the recent posts to see if someone else is asking the same thing. If that doesn't work I try and do a search. As was mentioned, the search can be frustrating because of wording or spelling. It has helped me though.

Sometimes the action in the forums is so furious a new post that goes unanswered can go to the far reaches (page 6 and beyond) in just an hour or two. Wading through that many pages can be tedious. I guess it's the hardcore addicted that go through that much trouble.

Like any public forum those that post a lot get read a lot. Those that ask questions without even making an effort to find an answer can push new topics to the bottom.

All of this goes to show how popular BYC is.

im gonna answer the very first unanswered one, if i can atleast :]
just to see if it would bring the subject alive :]
and if its not in the bst forum :]

One thing that really helps in getting responses or finding them later on is using good key words and descriptions in the title of posts.

Help!?!?!? OMG I NEED HELP NOW!!!

Is not nearly as informative as

Help, my hen is lethargic, standing like a penguin. Egg bound?

I also discovered the advanced search function and using AND OR.

When you're looking for information on pecking and someone posted as picking you won't pick up the other posts.

You can also use "word here" to find particular phrases, and * to denote a wildcard.

ie.

laying eggs

will find posts with laying and eggs

"laying eggs"

will find posts with the phrase laying eggs

chick

Will find posts with chick

chick*

will find posts with chick, chicken, chickenmonster and anything starting with chick.
