You know... this thread made me think a lot about what it's like to join a new group -- especially a close-knit busy group like this one.
I see posts about something sad, and the multiple responses from regulars - "so sorry to hear that!", "oh, my heart goes out to you", and so on.
When I am new to a group I do not respond a lot to these threads (even though I TOTALLY feel sympathy) because I feel like an outsider encroaching on someone's family funeral. Like people are going to think I'm all "I'm one of you!" right away, you know?
After a few weeks, once I see whether I am accepted to the group (or not), then I feel OK about getting more personal.
I've joined one or two groups in the past where I never was accepted- some groups are very very close-knit... just a few 'chosen' regulars. I usually leave quickly.
THIS group is truly unique and kind of amazing!
I have never seen this much unity, real caring, and consistent friendliness. Usually I see in-fighting between some regulars who just won't give up, arguing, disagreements and regulars who throw their weight around with the tender newbies.
So far I haven't seen any of that here!
