If the owner doesnt care about the dog and Animal Control wont do the job they're being paid for, then WE have to protect our livestock. Simple as that.

I wouldn't shoot the dog 'owner's fault completly'. Our friend has a huntin' dog named Walter that LOVES chasin' our chickens but he would never hurt them. He likes picking them up running to you and dropping them at your feet. Though I don't think the chickens like it so well. Our animal control comes out but we don't live THAT far out but we live right between Derby and Wichita if we call the Derby animal control they tell us we're in Wichita and to call them. If we call Wichita they tell us to call Derby. So finally we just told Wichita to get their butts down and get the dog. Now I call and they come I do not hesitate to yell at them over the phone. :]

The problem with that, Emzyy, is that the birds can die from the stress of being chased and can still have internal injuries even if said bird dog has a "soft mouth".

I will say once again:
If a dog is on a leash with his owner, he's a pet.
If he's running loose and chasing my animals, he's a predator...

And I am within my rights to take him out.

Rbaak...Triple S is the way to go...Shoot, Shovel, Shutup...
Poisoning the dogs isn't the right thing to do..it's not a good way to go.

Well said!

A friends dog would only do that to my birds one time. They'd get a warning and the next time it happened would be the last.

I live in Kansas too and it's legal in our state to shoot any dog who is harassing or killing your livestock. Plus the owner is financially liable for any animal that's been killed or hurt. So no, you won't get in trouble for shooting at them if they're chasing livestock.

"you can't just kill my dog. This is out in the country, you are supposed to let your dogs run loose. Two wrongs don't make a right. I'm going to call the human society."

Oh wow, that person is mistaken about the "law of the country" aren't they? It's actually quite the opposite. Even my neighbors, whose dogs killed my first chickens know that it's fair game for loose dogs to be shot.

I chose not to shoot them because it was a one time thing; at least I hope. I had never seen their dogs roaming in the 4 months that we lived here, I went over and warned them and they understood. End of story. Maybe it helped b/c they had once had show chickens that were decimated by the neighbors roaming dogs on the other side of them.

Either way, everyone I have talked to out here knows that if you let your dogs roam they are free game to be shot because they know the problems that roaming dogs; even pets, can create.

ETA" Of course I realize that this doesn't matter to people who regard dogs as expendable employees. They'll just get more dogs like you said.

Hope you get this worked out.
