Unconfined dogs and the damage they can do

Hi All, I'm new here so please be nice to me. I love owning Chickens, I live in a area where there are many illegal and naturalized alliens from Mexico. These people like to have there dogs roam at night to feed from every body elses trash. I get very tired losing my flock to stray dogs. I had 30 chickens once and 6 geese and a goat, a pit bull was in my yard chasing them and eating the chickens you can imagine the sound coming from there. I'm a pretty good shot if I'm angry, I noticed. I ran back in, grabbed my 30 30 and dropped a bullet right in between his eyes, the dog is dead.
Now living here in this area my wife was attacked by 6 dogs as she was trying to leave for work, mind you I have fencing so that dogs can't get in although they dig under the fence or jump, my yard looks like a jail with all the fencing. I called animal control they tell me they can't do anything because they roam free and don't have the money to send anyone. I thought about it for a minute and decided to control it my self. I can't just shoot dogs in my area or I will end up going to jail so I poisoned them. Once the dogs are gone the Mexicans have more, so I poison every 6 months now. This is not what I want to do I hate it, but when it comes to my property and our safety, something has to be done. We have a leash law I just wonder who controls that. Any way nice to meet all of you and sorry about my story but I was reading and thought to add my own.

I agree but at the same time disagree. I don't think people should let their dogs run loose but I don't think people should kill them either. We use just bebe guns to scare them away and you can always set traps and rehome the dogs if their friendly enough. Our neighbor's dogs used to kill our chickens we told the owner and now they keep them up. If they don't thats when you call animal control or just take the dog and rehome it. I don't think its the dog's fault I think its completly the owner's because a dog IS a dog they have instincts to chase, bite, and kill an animal. Anyway if a dog is running loose it can hurt someone or get hurt its self like get hit by a car or get shot at. Besides you can in trouble for shooting at them, just watch animal control on animal planet. People are actually put in jail for it, and fined.

In Idaho, if a loose dog is worrying, harrassing, or killing livestock, it can be shot and the owner is held financially responsible for it. It is good to know the laws where you live. My neighbors better keep their dogs locked up if they want to keep them.

Its also not fair if the dogs only get out once or twice but if the dog gets out constantly and is always harming your livestock then its different, but I don't think its fair to the dog or owner if you shoot the dog if its only gotten out once or twice. We have dogs run loose sometimes who don't even bother the chickens.

I moved away from Southeast Washington because it seems the law does NOT apply to the same illegal/barely legal immigrants. They blatantly violate the law and law enforcement sits by and watches. Their excuse is they don't understand.

I had a cop threaten to arrest ME for insisting HE do his job. Are we supposed to become a third world country too??
Shoot the dogs!!

I know you are only 15 and it is so good to see your passion but you really have to look at both sides here. The new guy on the block stated that he tried animal control and got no hlep. He also stated that people are being attacked. Mexican people do not look at dogs as pets they are working dogs and they leave them to fend for themselves. Ceasar (the dog whisper man) Millian in his first book explains this very well.

It is so good to see your passion and we learn from the passion the young show but we in turn hope that the young will learn from our experiance. Keep posting hunny

For me it was a matter of pure economics. The Animals are my livelihood. For some ones dogs to come in and kill them would be exactly the same as you losing your job with no chance of getting another for at least a year, and no unemployment insurance. I never hesitate, I shoot. Why take any chance at all?

I agree that it's not the dog's fault they have an irresponsible owner, but around here they don't get a second chance if they're chasing or harrassing our cattle or other livestock. You might feel a bit differently if it was your livelihood they were killing.

If Animal Control refuses to do the job they were set up to do, what the heck are they doing? Sitting on their fat tushes behind a desk, answering phones? They need to disband Animal Control and save some $$ for the citizens. That's just nuts. Just had a friend lose several of her birds to a dog that found a weakness and dug under a fence. Her dad shot the dog. The owner's reply was this:
"you can't just kill my dog. This is out in the country, you are supposed to let your dogs run loose. Two wrongs don't make a right. I'm going to call the human society."

If the owner doesnt care about the dog and Animal Control wont do the job they're being paid for, then WE have to protect our livestock. Simple as that.
