Wood chips will work. Use whatever you find easiest to maintain or acquire.

I use a 1x12 spruce board under my roost and scrape it off into a dustpan daily. It all goes to the garden compost pile then and this keeps my pine shavings very clean for a long time.

Inside the hen house we use a metal tray filled with wood shavings under the perches and also cover the whole floor with the deep wood shavings. In the pen or run we use sand under the perches.
