Understanding Chicken Math

Pics
I am so glad to hear that chicks hatched by our broody don't count. Wait....even if you bought the fertilized eggs they still don't count?

I really want a couple of turkeys, luckily our next door neighbors (hubby's cousin) bought a male and female turkey so that cured my urge to get some since we're over there all the time. Well, for now anyway.

Here's the formula so far that we have come up with:

1. Free chicks don't count
2. non-laying hens don't count
3. roos count as half
4. bantams (no matter laying status) don't count.
5. ornamental breeds don't count too
5. game birds count only as 1/2 as well
6. meat birds count as negatives on processing months, so you can get twice as many to replenish

Oh my word. We just went to a swap looking to get 2 EEs and brought home 7 chicks, doubling our little flock in 1 day!

okay, so I don't have any chickens...good!

Lol, my hubby keeps encouraging me to get more and keeps building more coops.  What lucky girls we are!!  :)   Which hatchery did you use?

I used Meyer hatchery out of ohio, we are only a few hours from them so I figured shipping would be easier on them. We only lost the one chick about a week after they arrived so I think we did good.

Oh man, I put in my first order and I'm scared! My hubby was thinking 4 would be good to start with and then I came on here and thought 6 would be the max... I think 8 will br the most, maybe, yes that is all that will fit in my yard. So here is my math. I ordered 13 chicks... I wanted 2 of everything in case one dies but I really want an EE so I got 3. Now the way that I look at it is that they won't all make it and at least one "pullet" will be a roo... So I should end up with 6-8 chicks after everything is said and done. But since they are chicks I'm still good and have none.

Not to worry, it takes a bunch of weeks for the chicks to get so big that space is a problem.
You have plenty of time to figure out a furutre plan on who to keep. Even if you keep all 13 and they are all large fowl,
you only need a 52 sq. ft. in your coop. That's only a 7' by 8' coop. and in the yard only 130 sq. ft. , that's
only a 8' wide by 16 ft. long yard. =128 sq. ft. Or you could do what some others did. They already had a smaller coop and run.
So they built a 2nd small coop and yard and attached it to the end of the 1st yard.
So they ended up with 2 small coops with 2 separate yards inbetween them.
In your case it could be 2 quan. 4'x6' coops with 2 quan. 6'x10' runs between them.
if you raised the 4x6 coops the runs extending beyond them would only have to be 6 ft. long to get 60. sq. ft. ..
Best,
Karen
