Understanding Chicken Math

Pics
So, we set out yesterday to get 2 EEs. We brought home 7 of various types and I'm picking up 3 BOs tomorrow. Someone explain to me how this happens. Lol!

It happens because having chickens is just so much fun! I just look out the window at them and just can't help but smile. Don't we need more smiles in our life? That's why!

couldnt help but brag about my newest order from MPC...its definitely helping to cheer me up after having to put my favorite hen to sleep today ( first chicken I ever owned ) I currently have a Millie Fleur D'Uccle a white Silky and.....6 new chicks , but thats just the tip of the chicken math iceberg.
Firstly , last week went to the feed store to get some timothy hay for the rabbit and of course I have to go look at the baby chicks. Mistake #1.
I also brought my significant other with me . Mistake #2. Not only did I get suckered in but he did as well. ( he keeps chickens as well )
I ended up buying 3 cochins for me ( one blue one buff and one white ) and 3 jersey giants for him . (all pullets)
THEN , I went onto MyPetChicken to look up a product someone had recommended to me. Mistake #4.
By the time I signed off MyPetChicken I had placed a rather exotic order! ( all pullets )

1 Blue Silky
1 White Crested Black Polish
1 Light Brahma
1 Buff Laced Polish
1 Appenzeller Spitzhauben
1 Barred Rock
1 White Sultan
1 Silved Laced Cochin
1Buff Silky
1 Mottled Cochin

Pretty expensive but worth it. Chicks are to ship on June 22nd!!!

They should be quite a sight to see when theyre all foraging around my property together as adults..hopefully will be a beautiful mixed flock.

So my husband is building us a chicken coop as we speak and he keeps saying "well if you get more all we have to do is this"....... IF! LOL!

I'm just starting out on my chicken adventure. I started with 10 fertalized eggs, 3 of them didn't develop, 7 made it and hatched. A couple of days later i put them outside in the garden in a pen to have a run about on the grass. Everything was going great. Then when i went to bring them back inside i saw the neighbors big ginger cat in the pen! They all got eaten

But a week priviously my friend had bought 2 chicks from the market because she thought it would be nice for her daughter and she was intending on giving them to me to add to my flock. I picked up these new chicks this morning seeing as mine got eaten yesterday. Tomorrow the farmers market is on again and the people will be there selling their animals. I'm going to get more, not sure how many i should get but the way things have gone so far i'm thinking a bigger number.......to be continued.....

Oh that's so sad!! I'd be upset too. Mine might stay in the roomy coop unless I'm outside, I'm afraid of hawks getting mine. I've seen some neighborhood cats but at night. And a random dog which is one of the reasons they are in a fence.

I'm gutted about it. All that effort just to feed the neighbors cat! They were fenced in but it was open at the top which was no problem for the cat to jump over. I'm never leaving these new ones outside unattended! Can cat's kill fully grown chickens? I was hoping to let them roam free in the garden during the day.

I think it was the neighborhood cat who left me this message.

I think it's a hair ball with feathers in it and bird feathers (uneaten) spread around it right outside my front door. I've lost one chick (6 weeks old) through some 2x4" wire. I thought it was one of my dogs, or a raccoon..I've also found at least two-three dead birds in my backyard (wild birds) since I've gotten the chickens.
Could it be a cat is staking his claim to my yard as his territory? Guess I'll be needin' me a trap.
