Understanding Chicken Math

Pics
.... I went to the feed store as well, swearing only to get the new chick feeder and crumbles I needed. Then my daughter found "cupcake" and we had to bring her home. I am a weak, weak woman when it comes to chicks lol

Since my chicken math is so bad I'm wondering if I should just build an 8x8 coop instead of a 6x8. Those pieces of wood I just brought home ARE 8' long for a reason...

Here are our THREE chickens.

We decided to get 3, as our coop is small.
Found out you must buy 6 in NY....OK.
Decided to keep 4, just in case.
Considering expanding the coop, and keeping them all. Also building a run big enough for a 2nd house this size in it next to this one, ummmm, you know....if something comes up and we should happen to need it next year.

I get chicken math now too.
OH, they are so cute!! You need at least two more since you couldn't possibly get rid of any. :) Hee Hee!

I would like you to meet the newest product of chicken math!

Family of four; eight chickens. This is what we decided.

Last year we finished the year with only 3, so this spring my sister and I incubated eggs. We brought home 9 chicks within days of my adopting two RIR laying hens from my mom's friend. But 3 or 4 chicks are male, so they don't count, and we will have 10-11 hens by fall.

We didn't have blue egg layers though! Then one day, I stumbled on an ad for blue egg laying cream legbars...after an hour of searching. We picked them up tonight. I don't need 2 new pullets to replace my roos. I already dis-counted them!

It didn't matter though. Once we got past 8 chickens, we needed a bigger coop anyway. :)

Yup. They are 8 feet long so that when you lay them end to end, you'll have a big enough coop for all the chickens you'll end up getting.

My chicken math skills keep getting better!

Ok, so I started off wanting 3 chicks, ordered 4 "just in case"...but then decided I NEEDED those chocolate eggs, so I added a black copper maran. THEN the small human says we need "blue eggs" - so I'm trying to get a cream legbar from my hatchery.

In the meantime, the small human fell in love with silkies...we found a local breeder who will sell sexed pullets & will have a female later this summer.

6, 7 - who can count anymore!

My Hubby said I could get 6 chickens. I said I wanted birds that would lay coloured eggs. But we have young children who are sure to want to chase and play with any chickens we get and might accidentally hurt one....So I bought 6 pullets to practice with. One is a rooster.
Then I bought 11 straight run chicks and 4 of them are roosters. So my five roosters cancel out my 5 practice pullets and I am left with 2 Ameruacana pullets, 2 Black Copper Maran pullets, and 3 Easter Egger pullets. That is only one more then I wanted. Look at me being all grows up and mature and ably getting 7 chicks ;)
