(Story summary: Humans destroyed the earth, and died out. 10,000 years later, there are multiple, new versions of humans that live underwater. They want to somehow invent a way to conquer land, and rule over the world like their ancestors did.)
Humans were the rulers of the earth. They grew the plants they wanted, raised the animals they wanted, killed what they wanted, and made what they wanted.
But while human beings did whatever they wanted, they were gradually destroying the earth. Year after year, the air was becoming worse and worse. Humans were noticing, but no one was stopping or really could stop it.
Eventually, the air was too poor to live in. No animal nor person could survive. Everything was catching on fire, drying up, or just randomly dying of unknown causes.
There were no plants, there was no food, and eventually everything on earth was eliminated.
Finally, the earth had time to recover, and make its new version of a human.
10,000 years later, the earth had completely healed and looked healthier than it ever had before. And this plentiful place was helping many new species grow. Now there were the new versions of humans, and they lived underwater, in tribes.
They were intelligent enough now to have goals and actually want to leave their prison of water and go forth to take over land, so now that is their main goal. Everyone wants to leave, but even for the most intelligent aquatic creatures alive, that would be difficult.
Humanoid species (each species is a different tribe, basically):
Merpeople - These mermaids and mermen are rather different than the fairy tales. They have slightly transparent skin, razor sharp teeth, milky white eyes, webbing between their fingers, and the females usually have hair past their tails (because who needs haircuts, right?).
They are carnivorous.
Simius - Simius are a lot like mermaids, but a little different. Their entire bodies are covered in scales (of any color) and they actually do have two legs with thin, fin-like feet they use to propel themselves. Their long, boney hands have webbing and usually none of them, female or male, have hair. They're vibrantly colored and have poisonous spikes on their back, but usually they're pretty harmless.
They are herbivorous.
Sirens - Sirens are like the more beautiful version of merpeople, basically. They have colorful hair, shiny vibrant tails, and love to wear anything that's shiny and jewel-covered. They have snake eyes that often look glossed-over due to protective, transparent eyelids they have over their eyes.
The males are a lot like the merpeople, they obviously don't wear jewelry or anything, but at least aren't as deadly looking.
They are omnivorous.
Sea Colubers - Colubers are pretty much what you'd get if you added a sea snake and a human together. They come in four different, bright colors (yellow, green, orange, white) and are covered in hard, smooth scales. They are very tall and have longer, flatter feet than humans so they can easily swim through the murky waters. All Colubers have fangs, and therefore are venomous. Their venom is deadly to smaller creatures, but in large doses can be fatal to the other humanoid species.
They can leave the water for short periods of time, but can't move on land very well.
The females have hair but usually the males don't, and they do need to stick their heads out of the water every once in a while to get oxygen.
They are carnivorous.
