Okay, I have 2 Silkie brothers that are currently 23 weeks old. I've watched them doing their little mating dance to my ladies and I've also seen them mounting my ladies, however, the ladies they pick to mate are my big dual purpose girls and they don't seem able to reach!!

They hold onto the feathers at the back of the girl's neck but while they're holding on, the business ends are nowhere near each other!! I'm guessing this will not improve as I think they are pretty much full size now. Do I just have to accept that I won't be getting any fertilised eggs anytime soon? Or will they learn how to overcome the size difference? (Roteiller and chihuahua spring to mind!):D:lau

That’s funny . My EE hen hasn’t ever had fertilized eggs (I’ve tried to hatch them) and I’ve never seen my silkie Roo do the dance to her. I figured he just didn’t like her but maybe it’s because he can’t do the deed lol. No problems with my other girls but they are smaller.

I have heard but am not sure how to go about trimming the feathers on a silkie roos business end to make him more effective doubt that would fix the bad aim problem though.

It isn't about the feathers, it's more about the rooster learning to ride further back on a large breed hen so he can do his business. It takes a while for them to figure it out because they have to adapt.

Just a bit of an update... can't believe it, but they've managed it!! I've been checking the fertility of the eggs and this week, finally found a bullseye! On one of my bigger girls eggs. So you were all right, they finally figured it out. :lau
