Unemployment almost 10% nationally

That 10% doesn't include those who's benefits have ended, those who don't apply for benefits, or those who own small business's who have gone under. The numbers, as are most, are fudged.

Nevada has the highest rate at 14%, Michigan sits at 12.9%. Benefits should be extended... This is a safety net, and they are taxed.. want programs yo cut.. look at people who make a career out of living off the system.

And i say extend the benefits..

The statistics also show a VERY strong correlation between benefits and unemployment - specifically, when benefits increase, unemployment stagnates. When benefits disappear, unemployment improves. That's what comes of destroying the incentive to get a job.

no, you are wrong. That was an article in the WSJ. The fact of the matter is... not wanting to get political, is that Companies are rewarded for allowing jobs to go overseas, and until the loopholes are closed, this trend will continue.

Northeast Michigan for years had the highest regional unemployment at something close to 20%. Of course when I draw unemployment and then get a part-time job and now in a part-time teaching job which is what I was laid off from to begin with, the MI UIA now telle me I have to pay back $2600+ dollars because they overpaid me.

YOU (referring to the UIA) told ME I was eligible for extended benefits even after I wrote a letter stating what my new employment statement was. Of course my father's girlfriend has been on unemployment for over 3 years.

Sorry to rant. The unemployment came in handy but I wish someone there had paid a little more attention to numbers. I always claimed the earnings I made, filled out paperwork, called MARVIN.

I wouldn't have minded if my benefit had been less and I don't care that I'm officially off it now, but I am ticked that I have to pay them back because THEY made the mistake.

The real unemployment rate is most likely more than twice the reported one. I could see the problem of extending the benefits but not extending it would be a disaster for many people. If the US can spend billions of dollars in other areas why not spend a little to help its own citizens?

Ahh.. but thats not true of most folks on unemployment.. not true at all.
Most folks WANT to work... there are NO jobs... none.
Even low paying jobs that teens can do.. mcdonalds..restaurant work.. cashier at a gas station... busboy..waitress work
none... all the jobs are taken.
My teen foster sons have been everywhere in this town... there are NO jobs for people.
Hubbys sheet metal job ended today... hes back on unemployment again until more work comes in... trust me..he'd rathe rbe working.. hes a provider..not a lazy scum bag...
Hed even be willing to deliver pizzas.. anything... there is NO work.

What it says on paper isnt always the real world, kiddo..
Lets think about reality here.

So.. yep..i say EXTEND benefits.

I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said, but okay...

You wanna know why jobs are headed to China? Because the labor is competitive! It's not a difficult concept - here in the US, the minimum wage and other regulations prevent US companies from being able to compete with places like China and India. What do you suggest to remedy the problem? Prohibiting companies from moving overseas? Great, if you don't mind making them go bankrupt, or their prices increasing exponentially. Preventing imports from China? Congrats, the cost of living goes from high to crazy insane high.

So far, I have seen no other viable remedies that won't kill the economy and make everything more expensive.

I am very much aware of that - and please do not pull the age card, I study economics in my spare time, so I am quite familiar with the subject.

I am not saying that all unemployed don't want to get a job - obviously many DO. But the fact is, humans will naturally want to do as little work as possible, and many will happily leech off of others through unemployment benefits. I personally have seen many people who happily sit back and collect the welfare checks, then blow it on beer and whatnot rather than, say, savings to get a better education, or other worthwhile pursuits.

Again, there is an obvious correlation between benefits and unemployment - unemployment had actually been decreasing constantly UNTIL the so-called "war on poverty" was declared. Rates stagnated immediately.

Welcome to reality.

Yup..you study economics, you also enjoy history.. .. you're very book smart.

Reality is when you move out of moms house and have a mortgage and a family and you lose your job..
Thats reality.. Come talk to me then.

Not going to argue with you.. its pointless.
I'd suggest its dropped now.. so the mods dont get called in.
Peace..

ETA: You DO make valid points in your posts.. i get what you are saying about the welfare mooches with 5 kids from 5 different men.. ..i GET it.. I also know many folks that live like that.. ..
And it drives me NUTS..
