Unexpected hatching - help!

Something terrible just happened: I woke up and my whole shirt was wet with sweat. I found both the chick and the starling dead. I think the heat pump malfunctioned and kept on heating the room I was in with them. I'm crushed right now. I don't know if I killed them by keeping them close. My dad said that maybe they were just weak but I can't believe they would die at the same time just coincidentally.

Being damp from your sweat would definitely kill chicks especially at room temps (even fairly warm room temps.

That is sad. I am hoping it will be all plain sailing with your other chicks, but if any need to be kept warm apart from the rest from now on, I would consider using your incubator as a brooder. You'll need it to be a bit cooler than when you were incubating.

Why is it not staying warm in the brooder?
What are you using for heat?
I have a heat bulb that usually works well. Unfortunately, someone must've unplugged it today, because it wasn't working when I found them. The other chicks all cuddle together and keep warm this way but this one was too stupid to cuddle with them. The last time I saved it the heat lamp was working and it was still not cuddling with everyone or under the lamp, but lying somewhere else half dead.

If the chicks are huddled under the lamp, they are cold. If they are in the corners of the box as far from the lamp as they can get, they are hot. If they are dotted around the box and happily active, they are just right.

The thing is that the bandana was completely dry and the chick as well. It was just the lower parts of my shirt, so I thought maybe it was too warm.

I'll keep that in mind, I've got another one at 31 grams but it's doing great if it wasn't for the fact that it's a bit tiny. It also has healthy developing wing feathers, which the dead chick lacked. They were just completely not growing on one wing and even looked like they were underdeveloped. It was also stumbling backwards whenever I put it down after I saved it yesterday. Something I just remembered.

They are sitting under and around the lamp, but not always directly in the centre, just a lot around the edges of the circle. It is a big black bulb designed for this purpose and I take the temperature every other day to make sure all is fine. They have a lot of space to move from the heat source if they wanted too.

I think this particular chick was maybe not going to make it either way. It still hurts to lose them, though. Kia kaha!
