Unhappy quail - cull or cure?

He was just ignorant. Males mate each other when they don't have any other options. It taught me to do my research.
Of course I just wish ignorant people wouldn’t try to sell you something they don’t know about. And yes males will hump each other like crazy hahaha we found it hilarious I was like DUDE NOT in my office and NOT that one!!! Wrong one man... wrong one... not that there is anything wrong with that of course but there is if you want babies LOL!!

They are grown now and are obviously not still humping each other and have girlfriends lol

I learned this when I created a bachelor pen and started separating the extra males (had way too many) when they reached 5 weeks. They then started mating each other because they couldn't get at the females.

Well she's still here. Eyes seem slightly better. She's eating, drinking and pooping normally. Pottering about in the cat carrier. Still going to wait and see. If no better by the end of the weekend then will do the right thing. Next job is to look at building a nice house/run for the others add they're just in temp housing at the moment. Trying to rein in the temptation to go mad as I do only have 5 (well, at the moment...).

You know I just sketched out a nice coop/run a couple weeks ago, then went to buy materials and got a huge headache got frustrated and walked out LOL I’ve built before but I guess I wasn’t feeling it! Arrggg I had huge plans... lol... still do just haven’t gotten into building mood.

Please don't kill her if she is eating, drinking etc normally. She just has a superficial infection, where her skin was broken by the other ones. It looks terrible, I know, but she is probably only in minor pain. Very likely she could make a full recovery. Please respond if it's not too late. I have more suggestions.

I tend to agree it’s amazing how well quail will bounce back I’ve seen some serious recoveries lol full scalpings, babies born with a toe bent in the complete wrong direction that turned normal in 3 days, air cells that repaired themselves by the time hatch day came... I had written “help me” on an egg but it was completely fixed inside... hatched fine! They are good at healing! It’s like a super power is what I call it lol

Unfortunately by yesterday morning she had stopped eating and drinking, was barely breathing, just sitting gasping for air. I made the decision it was kinder to put her out of her misery than leave her for any longer. Very sad to do it. Will have to keep a careful eye on the remaining four. Am also now looking at the alleged female bobwhite who was calling yesterday and wondering if she is actually a he. Might take some photos and start a separate thread!

Sucks that you were put in a bad situation by an irresponsible breeder. She looked pretty crook in the photos and it sounds like she wouldn't have lasted much longer. Hope you have better luck with them in the future and don't need to cull for many years to come.

Sorry you had to cull. Sometimes you just can't help. Do you know how to vent sex? Hold the quail securely upside down as they flap to start then squeeze gently where the vent is. If a foamy substance comes out you've got a male. If not, happy days, you have a female!
