Wow! I'm glad I found this threat - such pretty birds!!! I thought I'd share one we like. I'm not sure what color you would call this handsome fellow, but we think he is pretty cool. I had ordered some high quality silkie eggs and he was one of the three that hatched. He started out solid black and has turned into this - he is about 6 months old now. Here is a picture of him with his two girls that hatched.

WHOA! Gorgeous! He is stunning! Makes me think birchen maybe? At least I always call black birds with grey hackles birchen, not sure if its always the case.

Thank you! He looks like he has horns on his head because of the white in his "poof" LOL!:D I've asked on the silkie threat to see if anyone knows the color - I know what you mean about the birchen - he does look like that, too!

So gorgeous! Reminds me of some of the roos I've gotten out of OEGB mixes. I love Huckleberry's dilute colors and the contrast between the black and gold on Griffin.

That's leakage; he isn't producing enough black pigment- so on the longest feathers usually you get leakage of the undercolour, either gold or silver (or buff or red, depending on breed and modifiers). Genetically he is silver (if he was not genetically silver, his 'fringe' would be golden or red or some shade between). We have a roo like him, not as extensive with the white, but you can see the same effect.
Its a fault, and silkie breeders tell me not to breed him, as it will get passed on, but if you do not show and don't mislead buyers of fertile eggs (if you even sell them) breed what you like, IMHO. I love his personality and bred him for that.

Here is another I found on pintrest that looks like he is golden (Ss) instead of silver:

Fascinating info. Thank you so much! He is very gentle and sweet so we are just enjoying his beautiful coloring and personality his girls haven’t started laying yet but since their eggs are so small we don’t sell them. I may try to incubate some next year.
