Uniquely Colored Ameraucanas.

I saw your auctions! Nice little birds

Nicer than the other's that's for sure.

On an unrelated note...there is a very nice pair of black rosecombs for sale on there.

Hello everybody,

I am new to chickens and I am raising 15 chicks (including 5 of what they call "Ameraucanas") from McMurray for a backyard laying flock. While I very much like the idea of helping to preserve rare breeds, I mostly just care about happy, healthy, laying chickens.

I was wondering - do any of the big hatcheries breed real Ameraucanas or are they all just mongrel Easter Eggers? Also, for a simple, small backyard laying flock, is there any advantage to having true Ameraucanas or disadvantage to having the Easter Eggers? I am assuming the "Ameraucanas" I got from McMurray are really Easter Eggers? Either way, I like them

Ahhh....see this is where you and he differ. It's all about being able to make the sale.

If you look at your birds you degraded their 'perceived value' by right off the bat calling them non-unique. Why no say something like "Stunning color!" You're not lying, and it's true.

People also value things that are valuable. If it's expensive then it must be valuable....right?!?! This is why brand names can get away with charging an arm and a leg for a t-shirt with the same amount of material in it as the bargain basement t-shirt.

If you place the starting bid really low, then they must not be as valuable as the mutt roos by the other seller....right?!?!

It's all about how you pitch the birds to the buyers. The other buyer has inferior birds, but a better sales pitch

I wouldn't buy them because I'm smart enough to know better, but what about the people who don't? All they see is unique, vs non-unique in the auction headings.

Just my 2 cents though

This where I differ with a lot of backyard breeders. Why lavish all the attention and care on Mutts. A beautiful show quality purebred will not eat any more feed and often will prodcuce as many or more eggs. I feel that the backyard breeder who has only a few well cared for birds is in a unique position to maintain the purebred lines. Whenever I get any animal my first thoughts are how will they do in the show ring. Check my avatar for example or google Manna dairy goats.

My listings contain just a little sarcasm. But the starting bid on the ee's was $10.00 for a pair, so my birds are worth more just going by the starting bid.

I was hoping to get some attention with my blatant use of the word "unique".

also, I ask about purebreds in case some day I do really get into it and want to breed, etc. But, for now, that stuff is the farthest thing from my mind. These birds' lines will end with me as far as I can imagine for now.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a nice flock of mix breed chickens. If that's what you like then by all means go for it. Variety is the spice of life after all

To my knowledge there is not particular advantage or disadvantage between the two breeds unless eggs color, and show quality are things you are concerned about.
