We have a flock of seven hens, just over a year old. A few days ago I discovered what appeared to be a "lash egg" in one of the nesting boxes, and today there is another one. We are extremely worried about our flock. We have had lower than usual egg production for a few weeks, but we thought it was because of molting, since we noticed more feathers about the run. Now I am not so sure. Behavior wise, everyone seems to be acting normal, although on close inspection I can see that one of our Russian Orloffs has a bit of feather thinning at the top of her head. She is the first we will isolate to see if we can identify who is sick.

Besides isolating the chickens one by one, is there anything else we can do? We are going to deep clean everything in case it is an E. coli infection. Has anyone had experience with lash eggs and how to treat? We also have some 14 week old pullets who were going to be joining the flock soon, but we haven't started the merge yet. Now I suspect we will wait.

I would not isolate any of the chickens. There is no need for that. Chickens can get salpingitis from an inflammation of the oviduct. Salpingitis is not a disease that is spread. It can be due to a number of viruses or bacteria, but those can be from a respiratory disease, nlood infection, or vent pecking. Do any of the hens have a lowered tail, or are any obese or have a swollen lower abdomen? Are the crops all empty in early morning before they have eaten? Here are some articles about it:
