Unknown creature got one of my hens last night. . .

I'm one of those quesy kind of people and don't know that I could stitch her but I wonder if I'd have the same luck with a butterfuly bandage. I have wrapped her all around her body and under wings with an ace bandage. That was more so to keep dirt and stuff out. I'm getting ready to head out and get some saline as was suggested to use to clean her up and then will put neosporin on it an rewarp with something different that I pick up at the drug store. I guess good advice that I can give to people is if you're going to have chickens it's a good idea to put together a chicken first aid kit.

I will try the eggs and a touch of honey but I'm not going to do anything else at this point other than water until I get her cleaned up. I'll post pictures at tha time so folks can see what I'm talking about.

I had a coon try and get one of my brahma hens, she got away but lost a chunck of flesh off her neck. She lived.

Here's a picture of her. The wound is mostly healed in the photo. Currently it's still a bare patch of skin as she's not gone through a molt, so I don't know for sure if the feathers will grow back.

Her wings appear to be fine. Her injuries are all under her wings. I'm thinking it's more muscle damage than anything. I have not seen her stand at all but like I said I am in order to not cause my paint I am not even checking to see if she can stand at this point. All feathers under wings and on her back are gone. Naturally when touching the area of the injuries she whinces but for the most part eyes are closed all the time unless I'm am giving her water.

I hope they don't feel pain like we do. I must say when I found her last night though she did seem pretty happy to see me.

Cuban,

Imagine that but completely covering the whole area under each wing. Nasty.

Saline and Neosporin are fine. Please don't try to sew or butterfly the wound closed, it needs to heal from the inside out, you would only be sewing infection in. You may not need to dress it, either, if she is isolated indoors. The Neosporin in itself should make her more comfortable.

Chickens heal amazingly well. Good luck.

Wow... that is bad. I'd try and leave it open, maybe cover it with a light gauze. With the wound on my hen, her neck feathers formed a kind of hard bandage over it that gave it protection but allowed it to heal. Yours sounds like she's missing too much to try the feather bandage thing. Usually if you can keep them hydrated, fed, and from getting an infection, they'll recover just great.

Sounds like you're doing your best for her. You can also get povidone iodine at farm supply stores (or even the Betadine douche at Walmart), make a diluted solution of it and rinse her wounds with that, then apply an antibiotic ointment. If you REALLY think she's in pain, you can give her baby aspirin in water (You might want to check the actual dose; I'm sure it's on here somewhere). She may be sleeping a lot because she's sore and still in a bit of shock from the trauma. I hope she recovers completely.

Sadly my little girl didn't make it. We tried really, really hard but I think it was probably better that she passed. I don't think she ever would have been quite the same. Thanks for the support.
