I’m pretty sure that’s why they were bred. The Dong Tao, I mean. People liked eating chicken feet, but the yield is really low in a normal chicken.

Breed Standard of Dong Tao Chickens
Dong Tao Chicken is considered unique among dozens of chicken breeds in Vietnam.

The legs of Dong Tao Chickens grow as thick as a human’s wrist. The size of their legs is not just unusual for chickens; it is rare for any kind of bird their size

• They are large birds that can be wider than a human holding one.
• Their height is as tall or taller than a bottle.
• Female Dong Tao Chickenfeathers are a beautiful all-white, or white mixed with light brown, while roosters are multi-colored in auburn and red, grey, white and black. Chicks are white with black wings.
• The feet of both females and males are covered in reddish scales, which is what gives them their resemblance to dragons.
• Many delicious dishes are made from Dong Tao Chickens, which have firm, crisp, sweetmeat, pink brisket, and well-developed thigh meat.

The biggest pair of Dong Tao Chicken legs possibly on record, are soaked and preserved in alcohol. Each leg weighs 1 kg (2.2 pounds).

Part of the reason for the high price per chicken is that it can take 8 months to 1 year for a Dong Tao chick to mature. Typically chickens reach sexual maturity and begin laying eggs at 16 to 24 weeks.

What is Diatomaceous Earth supposed to actually be for? I have never tried it but have read good and bad things about it. Of course, I would never use such a powdery substance around my birds. It seems like it could harm their lungs.

Takes 2 weeks to break the life cycle of ectoparasites that have a life stage off the bird. Dump DE on the ground/ floor under the roosts. Any larvae from stick-tight fleas lands in it and dries up and dies. It’s the least caustic if eaten. Wood ash is more caustic and may be substituted. I had a day old chick and broody that picked up mites and the ash stopped that. Hydrated lime is even more caustic and will cause harm if eaten. I had a hen die right after that. Ground squirrels carry sticktight fleas and can transmit them to chickens, cats, dogs, Muscovies, horses, and humans.

I think I saw that once on an episode of cops in a Florida trailer park... but it didn’t involve chickens... it was just a domestic dispute over a pink bean bag where a skinny guy named Hawk stashed his illegal drugs

It costs just as much to feed a good looking healthy chicken as it does to feed a reject bird that has its head twisted around sideways. You can give em all the vitamins you want to prop up a deficiency but you have to wonder if it’s wise to breed a bird like that?
