Unusually high mortality rates in chicks for 2013

I would love to follow a thread solely on cocci! I do admit that since I haven't had any problems THAT I'M AWARE OF***, I haven't been 100% aware of symptoms.
Please start a thread for it if there isn't one already!

Everyone thinks that blood in poop is a symptom because that is what so many people say! You know how those old wive's tales go and spread so quickly. I would love to clear up all the confusion. :)

I thought I knew a lot about chickens, but being on this forum makes me feel like a baby. :)

The very first chicks that I bought from feed store last year started walking on their hocks at about 2 weeks old. I researched it when the 2nd one started doing it. Vitamin E deficiency- I bought the Save-a- Chick packets, added to water and by the next day all were back to normal! I have forgotten the term for it but now I give the save-a-chick to all chicks for at least the first two weeks as well as medicated chick feed at least three weeks or when the 50 pound bag runs out. No other problems yet

Maybe my vitamin supplement has indeed gone bad and therefore is not helping them like it should! It is basically like save-a-chick, but marketed for more animals than just chickens. I will go get some today, but in the meantime, I may pop a vitamin e capsule and mix it with a little sourdough bread for the babies that have symptoms. I wondered about calcium deficiency (which may actually be a problem if the vitamin supplement isn't working because that was supposed to be their source of vitamin D and without that they will not absorb the calcium in the sesame seeds!)

Hhhhmmmmmm, if this works, we may have figured out my problem!

Also, could casportpony link an informative article/thread/post about cocci symptoms and info? I want to learn more, but with all the misinformation out there, I have no idea where to start.

Casportpony dDoes have a good post on coccidiosis somewhere. Pictures and everything. Coccidiosis does not have to show with bloody stool, most strains don't. Some kill fast , some without symptoms till right before they die. If my chicks wink at me wrong I treat them.
Could someone please link that post? :)
