Hi,
I bought 7 sexed barred rock pullets at the feed store.

Most of them had larger head spots and 1 looked more
like a penguin than a chicken and different in the face
than the rest.

Most of them in the last few days are starting to get
a pink color to their beak.
At 4 weeks is this too early for pullets?

Anyhow, hope my pictures aren't too big.

DH helped me and had me laughing so hard as he
was saying silly things like: "Here's Speckles on the
runway, look at her strutting her stuff!"

I can't believe I got any pictures.

Chick #2 is the one that looked like a penguin and who's
beak looks different than the others. In fact it's whole head
looks different to me. Maybe the way it holds it or something.
#2 is my avatar peep also so you can see what it looked like at
10 days.

and here is a picture of (#2) on the
ground:

I have a couple that haven't gotten the pinkish color yet:

And here's a picture of as many as I could get in 1 picture.

This last picture shows the 2 with the most pink in the center.
Nothing screams rooster to me but why do some have more
color than others?

So, what do you Barred Rock experts think?

I am really new to this too but my barred rocks started getting a little red at about 4 weeks, too. So I assume it must be normal for them. I'm not much help other than that. They are definitely cute, though. Good luck!

Im surprised Cyn hasn't chimed in yet, Im sure she will and will have more effecient advice than I....but....in the last picture that you posted the chick that is on the right, kinda in the middle of the picture looks like a male to me. If you could get a body shot of each of them, it would be a ton easier to sex them. JMHO

Thanks KLH2010. That's good to know it may be common.

dustin, do you mean the one that's pecking at
the ground?
Or the one standing upright?

I was told that the wider barring is a male and the thinner barring is a female if that helps. Hard to tell from pics but that one does look to have wider barring??

Marie

Hi marie,
He does look lighter in that picture and his bars
look wider but when you look at him with the
others there's not a huge difference.
I find I have to really look for him now that
they've all feathered out.

Listen to me refer to him as "him" Ha!
I wouldn't mind if he was a rooster.
But just one. I only have 7 chicks.

DH said to get 7 as one would be a spare.
My Jack Russell killed one of our RIR's the 1st
day we had them. (this was a few years ago)
Jumped right up into the bathtub and reached
through the bars of the dog kennel they were in.
Very naughty dog.
But that's what Jacks are bred to do.

He has been threatened to within an inch of his
life with this batch though.
He's keeping his distance!
