You can use a tiny bit of coconut oil (be careful not to get any over the chicks beak/nostrils).

Water dries out the membrane.

As long as you don't see any large veins or bleeding you're alright to progress.

Use what is available oil or water, but apply only on membrane and not the chick.

If you're seeing bigger veins, moisten it really well and watch closely...I'd wait a bit before continuing if there are veins. If not, moisten and peel where there aren't veins.
