UPDATE-DELIVERED! :) USPS lost the chickens I shipped Monday!!!!!

I am SO glad this worked out ok! Great job to you for packing them so well. I hope you're still requesting a USPS refund, because it's still unacceptable to pay those express rates for service that took so long.

Yes, I will give it a try! So now that I have the receipts back I can start that process. (my husband took the car with the receipts in it to the airport for the week).

Wonderful news!

Cucumbers! What a great idea! I always use melons, oranges, tomatoes, and things like that. I would have gotten cukes if I'd thought of that one!

Glad they made it safe and sound, shipping birds is nerve-wracking!

Way to go generalising a whole workforce ole rooster. Interesting that you have that conception about me, whom you've never met..... I want you to know that I have worked at the post office for over 21 years. I know over 200 postal employees, and I can say that not a one of them 'thinks the world bows at their feet and just don't care'. They are all just a general representation of the rest of the population. Other than we have a VERY high percentage of veterans in the workforce. Many Vietnam vets where I work. A few 'Desert Storm'. I myself am a widowed mother of three, with one child left at home. yeah, we have a few lazy people. But we have a far higher number of people who work very hard, are very concientious, and go home at the end of the day, having worked hard. We work terrible hours. Typically 3:30 p.m to midnight, or midnight to eight thirty or so. The few of us who have managed to get into day time jobs are d@mned lucky. You have no idea of the complexities involved with processing billions of pieces of mail every day. 6 days (nights) a week. It's all done by machines, baby.... Outgoing, one sort plan. Incoming, another sort plan... Carrier routing, yet another sort plan. I would estimate that each letter-sized mail-piece goes through a minimum of two sorting machine, and up to 6 or 7 machines. It does take a toll on an envelope. Count every letter sized piece of mail you receive in one month, and tell me how many of them are actually 'torn to shreds'? One? None? You know what, though? We are human. Sometimes things happen that are beyond our control. I don't know about you, but I don't claim to be perfect.... I do claim to work really hard, and I give my customers the best of myself. I try to every day, but you know what??? Sometimes I get sick (and go to work anyway, because we are short-handed). Sometimes I am just having a bad day... Sometimes I am trying to do three or four things at the same time, and I get distracted. I still give my best effort every day, and I work with many many others who do. So, I call BS.....

GAchick, I'm sorry you have to come here and defend yourself and your work.
It really irks me reading some of the comments I've seen about the USPS here. (not just here, but other threads as well) My mother has been a rural carrier for many years and my younger brother has been working as a rural carrier while going to college part time. It may be easy to blame an organization.... But, behind it all are a lot of under appreciated workers. Delivering mail through hurricanes, remember Irene?? Yeah, they were out there delivering your mail, sorting a 6 foot tall stack of letters in a post office that didn't have any electricity and driving their own vehicles through roads that were starting to flood. And that's just one example. Also, to the people who say "no wonder the USPS is going broke"... have you heard of the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act? Basically, they are being forced to overpay into their pension funds by billions of dollars... And has been requiring a mandatory payment of over $5 billion a year over the next several years. Not surprisingly, the problem lies in Washington.

I'm glad it worked out. I have shipped LOTS and LOTS of birds, chicks, eggs and only once had an issue- when receiving chicks they were delayed, but we drove to the hub and got them.

I've had eggs that were shipped which hatched 100%- and that's wonderful!! I have had a few sets that didn't do so well, but all of my live birds have been handled with care and have made it quickly.

Shipping to somewhere near often takes longer than far, as the flights cut the time. Shipping to somewhere far from an airport is also a lengthier time, as they may have to go by truck for a while.

I respect the work the USPS do, and I'm grateful they are there to do it. No complete population of people can be judged by the way a system works. There are too many variables. I know we have a lot of conscientious BYCers who work for the USPS, too. I'm certain they don't fit a stereotype of uncaring lazies.

Play nice, folks. The world already has enough negativity. Let's focus on the good- the birdy got there!! Woooohoooo!!!!

If the shoe fits then you have to wear it. If it doesn't, then don't put it on. No need to defend yourself. If you do all you can do for the PO not one to abuse your job, then you know the shoe doesn't fit so you aren't part of the problem. Also because you happen to be 'nam vet, desert storm, handicaped or an X governor, that do not mean that person is compent on the job. That just means they got preferential consideration in getting the job. Now all you have to do is finish out your time and draw the govenment pension paid for by the American workers and reflect on all the great work you did to deserve it.

I don't know but is the USPS and the PO operating in the same fashion?

But it is a big relief the chicken were found and will be OK.

I'll back out of this one before some of PO workers get defensive. I don't want to make you angry. Life just ain't worth it.

This isn't about the postal workers. Everyone I encountered was very friendly. This is about a broken Process. the people can only do so much when working with a broken process. If other companies can do this one can to. This one is behind the times and needs ashore overhaul to stay competitive.
