UPDATE-DELIVERED! :) USPS lost the chickens I shipped Monday!!!!!

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm thankful they take birds as well.

Let's forget a moment these are chickens. What about that premium I paid for overnight expeess guarantee date time arrival? I know I'll get that back (and will reimburse the customer) but sheesh... What if this were some kind of time critical document? I won't be using USPS for anything I need rushed again. Its not just the fact they were MIA, it's the fact nobody could tell me exactly where they were sitting. FedEx and ups does a much better job at tracking things.

I hope your chicks arrive soon and healthy. Its frustrating when any type of package is delayed or misrouted especially a live shipment and you cant get answers on any specifics. The USPS could stand to do an overhaul of their tracking system for sure.

Just for information purposes - you have to remember that USPS does not have total chain of command in the shipping process when packages are shipped via express. They have contractual agreements with carriers such as UPS & Fed EX to fly those parcels point to point for them.

USPS has not flown their own mail for quite some years now & while this is not an excuse for them, Considering the volume of mail pieces that are handled on a daily basis and what is involved in handing off parcels to contractual carriers and such ,it is a miracle that the system works as well as it does eventhough they can and do drop the ball every now and then

Nothing surprised me these days. The USPS is consolidating "processing plants" moving things around. I'd be surprised if they were lost as much as misdirected by a misread zip or some other information. I tell everyone to PRINT in BLOCK letters addresses and zips. Or better yet use a computer and a font size of 16 or better. Taper over it with clear packing tape to keep it from getting wet. Put the address on more than one place.

Unfortunately there is no way to know which hub routes are now in place. Usually this would be the largest airports. Here in Syracuse, that would be Hancock Airport and then sent to the main post office on Taft road and then on to the Franklin Sq PO where all the other smaller PO 's meet to pick up the express mail.

I would call you local PO and try to find out which route your mail would take. If you are not far from the intercepting Airport you may be able to pick up chicks there. Instead of waiting til they get to your smaller local PO.

I hope they show up,

Rancher

BTW - It wouldn't hurt if everyone here wrote to the Postmaster General about our concerns with getting eggs and chicks shipped. Perhaps make it a single day mailing so he gets all our letters on or around the same day. Just a short note saying we're concerned. I'll get back with the address and a day. Anyone else with me?

I hope they arrive safely to their destination today.

Just FYI, tracking is not updated after being processed through the originating sorting facility until they process through the destination sorting facility. This is because Fed Ex transports the live shipments for USPS, their scanning systems do not sync therefore it will appear that they might be in limbo, lost etc but in fact are still in transit. The USPS does not refund any Express shipping fees unless it is past the 3 day live bird guarantee. I have had birds take 48 hours to arrive and others take less than 24 hours. I feel fortunate that our local post office is so good with handling the live shipments. As a matter of fact, yesterday I picked up one bird at 8:00 am and came back home . I had 4 other birds scheduled to arrive yesterday but was fully prepared for them to arrive this morning. I got a call around 11:00 am that the other birds were there . I got in my car to head to the post office about 30 minutes after the call and a special USPS courier pulled in my drive and hand delivered all four of my little fuzz butts.

I think the USPS is guilty of very poor communication even with their own employees but especially with the public in regard to shipping methods for live animals. However, considering that I've had 20+ birds shipped to me in the last 6 weeks I can honestly say I have had zero issues. Poor communication yes but that's about it. After raising and showing dogs for 15 years and shipping all over the country including to Belgium, England etc, I can tell you that I will take the post office any day over any of the airlines shipping dogs!

I have yet to have a live bird shipment arrive at it's estimated arrival time. Just this week I sent some birds to Indiana. Driving time is approximately 4 hours from departure P.O. to destination P.O.
The birds shipped out on Monday (truck leaves my P.O. around 4 p.m.) and arrived Wednesday morning. I always tell my customers to plan on a 2-day trip for their birds. Thankfully, I've only had one take more than 2 days, that was from KY to WV. I was told that packages to WV from here have to be trucked.

maybe try [email protected]

Most likely the only result that will have is the USPS ceasing all live bird and egg shipments.

If I were to complain about anything it would be the FACT that their overnight express mail system needs an overhaul. And keep the chicken part out of the letter.

Had two birds "lost" last year by the PO. They went north instead of south, etc. Thankfully there was a guy in Maryland that fed them and gave them water when they realized they were in the wrong place. It still took over a week for me to get them. One was dead of course and the other died a couple of days later. Too stressed. I will never deal with shipped birds again.
