hi all,
this is Sunny Jim, my 4-5 week old easter egger chick. she is so sweet. i just love her to bits. i have searched past threads here and googled-a-plenty to try to figure out what she might look like when she grows up. the part that throws me is her white chest feathers. does anyone have any experience with a chicky looking like this?

thanks for looking,
rebecca

I've got a 2.5-3 week old EE. I'm new to all of this so am no help with your question.
I wanted to ask you about her temperament though. Mine is so sweet and docile that's the other chicks. She's so much this way that I've worried she's sick. Just curious how yours behaves since you said she was sweet.

GaChick, i also thought she ( i am sticking with calling her a "she" cos i refuse to believe otherwise....hee hee) was sick the fist day we got her. she is just more mellow than my other two new chicks (ameraucana and a polish). she sits in my lap and has even flown up to hang out on my shoulder. but she eats and drinks and poops all normal and never really acted lethargic or anything. i was just surprised at how complacent she was right off the bat. i really would be so sad if she ended up being a boy. roos are illegal here in denver.

I hope she's a hen. Roo's are illegal in my area as well, so I can empathize.
Mine is lethargic, so I think she may have runt syndrome.
Best of luck to you!

You may not want to hear it but that is a cockerel. The concentration of white starting to show mid-wing is a masculine trait. Black and white pu!let chicks are evenly patterned on the wings/back. His is a very common look.

thanks folks. i guess i should just be happy i found out now instead of later, when i am more attached.

i do want to add something, which may or may not change everyone's theories. there isn't really any red on the shoulders. it looks like it in the pics but i think that is just lighting. that particular spot is where the last of the chick's big bird feathers are coming in and they just look to be that same neutral dark brown and white that is going on the rest of its feathers. they could be more white or more brown...i have no idea yet.

and i also realize i am grasping at straws because i am emotionally attached. :)

I've read where people are sure of a rooster due to the comb, wattle and spurs. The chicken laid an egg, so it ended up being a hen. Fingers crossed for you!

I have a chick that looks just like this, but with no brown/red anywhere. I asked on the "what breed/sex is this?" part of the site and folks are leaning towards cockerel due to it's coloring. This is my first time with Easter Eggers. I have an adult rooster and swore I'd get rid of any of this year's young ones that were male, but this one has a gimpy leg and was separated with two friends a while ago. The plan all along was for these three to have their own coop next to the main flock 'cuz there's no way this little one could handle integration. So if it's a boy, so be it. I'd love to know for certain though, so I know whether to rename little gimpy Cleopatra to King Tut.
