Update on my Silkie Roo, David Crowie.

So, I want to apologize for not commenting more yesterday and today on my other thread. It's been a crazy hectic couple of days. I figured out what the problem was! It WAS lice. I looked him over again good this morning because he just wasn't getting better. He was worse, in fact. Lo and behold, his little vent area was swarming with them. So, today, I have washed all three of my silkies, sprayed them with poultry spray, and treated their house, along with my other hen house. I'm so glad I listened to what a lot of you were saying about not worming him yet. I think he probably wouldn't have survived the night if I had treated him. So, today, I know that it was not in fact worms, since his stool is normal again. Now I just pray he can begin this long road to recovery, finally. Also, he ate some tuna today, by himself, and drank a lot of his water! Thank all of you so much for your advice!! All of you and the lovely ladies on a chicken page on FB have helped me with my babies. I just pray he continues to recover.

Glad that you treated the lice. Permethrin is very good to kill lice on contact, and to use in 10 days for any remaining lice and to treat the newly hatched lice eggs. The coop will also need emptied, and the coop, nests, and roosts sprayed with permethrin and new bedding replaced.

Green runny poops are usually a sign of not eating enough, and that could be because of his leg problems. I like Poultry Cell vitamins, since it has riboflavin which NutriDrench does not, and riboflavin deficiency can cause leg problems. Dosage is the same as ND, 1 ml per every 3 pounds of weight.

Hopefully, he is just weak or injured, and it is not Mareks disease.

Hectic life happens to all of us some times. I'm not sure why start a whole other thread to say that?

Also, I'm sorry to say... but lice may contribute to things... like weakening the immune system so Marek's can step in. I truly hope your boy does recover! But with his symptom lining up more with Marek's than anything else... even if he recovers doesn't mean that wasn't it.

Lice suck! But the clues tell another story. Taking care of the lice will surely help the recovery. Great find! But I've had lice and not yet seen the symptoms you describe.

Post #7 on your other thread is an EXACT repeat of the Marek's I experienced. I'm sorry but maybe you can devise a chicken sling to help get him up off his legs and give him a way to stretch and maybe try to put some weight in his leg. If you google it you will get images. Some do regain use of their legs though it may take months and probably some physical therapy.

Normal stool does NOT mean there are no worms present in the same way that non bloody stool doesn't mean their aren't coccidia. Only 1 out the 9 strains of cocci will present as blood in stool. even then it won't be every single poo. Unless you had a fecal float to confirm worm count isn't what's taking a toll I really wouldn't rule it out as a contributing factor. Only round worms and tape worms can be seen in dropping but doesn't mean they will. The float is looking for the microscopic eggs because the worms stay inside the intestinal tract and only the eggs pass in the droppings.

Surely he already feels some better getting his lice off. Hope he continues!

Thank you! I will definitely look at the slings, and keep an eye on him. He is staying indoors until he recovers, of course.

I have checked out the things that mimic Marek's. And already given my opinion. Thanks for encouraging me to be open minded. After reviewing the symptoms I am still of my original assessment. But hope to see full recovery and especially hope to learn something new. Only way I can do that is by participating.

I have mixed feelings about this... Which is one reason I appreciate the chance to participate.. in order to consider how I will act in the future if I face it...

If it is contagious, of course that is possibly the best option.

If it is just a vitamin deficit or lice (I still STRONGLY encourage a flock fecal worm count)... he's gonna get his bumm kicked by the other cockerel upon reentry to that pen, in my experience. So I might try (if he is warm enough) keeping him in look but don't touch type kennel. Where he can be safe but still among his flock. Not only for the pecking order issues, but also to be able to see and hear the other birds.. maybe get some encouragement.

And since I can't seem to recall every detail I also suggest making sure he has a little soil dish or grit access to aid digestion. I don't know how long the original rocks will stay in the gizzard.
