UPDATE! Please help, Goose beak torn badly (pictures)

It seems to have stopped bleeding unless she dips her mouth into the water, then it looks like it bleeds again but it may just be the dried blood washing off.

I would be afraid of putting any type of tape on her beak since all that is on the bottom is her tongue. She seems to want to keep it wet by dipping her beak into the water she has in her coup.

There isn't a vet around here (Bolivar, Missouri) to take her to that I am aware of. I went through this, looking for vet that would work on a bird when my chicken prolapsed, and I couldn't find one. Tonight I found one in Nixa, Missouri but my husband said it would stress her out too much to pack her up and take her two towns away (over an hour away), he thinks that would kill her since it would scare her terribly and to be separated from her mate. I would try it if they would just call me back. I left an emergency call over two hours ago to an Avian vet two towns away. It is after 9pm here.

I really have no idea what to do in this situation other then the vet.
And i no you are having issues getting in touch with a vet...so you must feel really lost right now

So sorry to hear all this is happening to you and your goose.
I would be very angry at the neighbors!

If it is their cat then maybe they should have some part in the vet bill?
It is their responsibility to make sure their animals don't harm others or go on other peoples property, just like as if it was a dog.

I understand not wanting to stress her out by bringing her for a long drive to the avian vet, but this is a really bad injury.
If her life is at risk due to the injury alone or it getting infected, then i think its something you may have to do.

I really hope someone who knows what to do will comment soon <3

She looks like my Frenchie so it hurts me to say this, but I would cull her. She is not going to survive this kind of injury without some major intervention.

I am so sorry.

Thank you to everyone that has replied and for your caring words, I really appreciate this. I can't give up on her yet, she is walking around like there is nothing wrong other than she can't close her mouth. I am hoping she is not in pain, she doesn't act like it, I can't bare to think about this! I will see how she acts tomorrow...see if she is at least trying to eat. I don' t see how unless she uses her tongue to scoop it up...but I can't picture it. I hope the vet will call soon, but since he hasn't called in this long of time I doubt he is going to.

I had the exact same thing happen with an African gander about twenty years ago. I took him to a livestock vet and he sutured under his bill. It never did heal right, they said there was not enough tissue to stretch to cover the injury and the tissue there is too tough.

The sutures didn't hold and it continually reopened. I can't tell you how many times I would try to push his tongue back up through the hole and into his mouth. He would look fine and then his tongue would pop back out the hole. He was sort of able to eat and drink, but his tongue would dry and I finally had to put him down. He was my son's top SQ bird, Hakeem and we never even got goslings out of him.

In our case, he put his head through a fence. I was never sure if he caught his chin on barbed wire, or if it was the dog on the other side.

I would get her to the vet as soon as they call back and say to bring her. If she is going to be stressed out without her mate, I would load him up along for the ride to make sure that she is calm. She is very special to you, so you should do everything to try to save her.

I'm so angry right now and that dog gone blasted cat!!!!! I wanna cry.

I agree, get her to the vet as soon as is humanly possible. If you transport her in a covered crate (possibly with her mate) she should handle the ride better. Good luck!!

I don't know if this will make you feel better but we had a goose that lost most of her bottom beak and half her top and still lived a long long while. She adapted. At that time we took her to a vet but there was nothing they could do other than clean her up. I think my mom made ours like a slurry but cannot remember. I was like 6 so its been a long long while since I saw anything this bad.

Its not hopeless. I hope she pulls through for you. Geese are amazingly hardy creatures. Good luck
