UPDATE--Police on the Way. Neighbor's Dog Killed Chicken #5. Advice?

Oh, my neighbors are behind me. Things are going to get ugly, and I so can't wait.

This has been going on for months. This is the second letter I send this guy, but this one leaves no unanswered questions.

I think this one line should be removed...

My first priority is to kill your dogs. If I am unsuccessful, you will be summoned to court.

I think it's a given, but is one of those things that need not be said, especially if this ends in court..

I think you should have stated that your first priority is to keep your chickens safe and will do so with whatever means (within the laws of your area) are necessary...yada yada yada....

Change "My first priority is to kill your dogs. If I am unsuccessful, you will be summoned to court." to "My first priority is protecting my chickens; if that means I must kill your dogs, then I will do so." Don't imply that you will not take them to court if you kill their dogs--that stops the problem, but not does not resolve the previous wrongdoing.

Also, if the dog can break into the run and coop, then so can a coyote or raccoon or bobcat or other wild predator. You need to strengthen it. Set up a security camera to record what is going on at the coop. You can get relatively inexpensive ones or may even have that kind of mode on your video camera (mine does).

I agree. A lot of things can be said in the heat of the moment and while you may be thinking it and meaning it, sometimes its better not to put it in writing.

Having just lost 6 chickens this past weekend I can understand your frustration and anger but you want to make sure you do not put yourself in a situation that turns bad for you.

In my neck of the woods we practice the 3S's, shoot, shovel, shutup. DNR will not let you dispatch some animals if there is not a season on them. Likewise it's illegal here to kill a cat, even feral cats (becasue you can't always tell a feral cat from a pet). Some thinks are better not talked about.

Did the other neighbor who also experienced losses from this irresponsible pet owner help compose and/or SIGN that letter?

Did a lawyer review the letter before it was mailed?

(Mulling over possible complications here...)
