UPDATE--Police on the Way. Neighbor's Dog Killed Chicken #5. Advice?

neighbors can be a pain sometimes. I remember my dad got it trouble with the neighbors for shooting a squirrel with a BB gun. It wasn't on their property or anything. Go figure.

While I agree with the others (first priority), I have an issue with the poison. Are you planing on just killing his dogs, or every living thing that enters your property for a late night snack. Just because you want to kill his dogs, does not give you the right to poison a rabbit that stops by to visit. If you can legally shoot where you live, get a gun and TARGET the problem.

I would like to hear from Preservation Acres on this....I think that this thread will get out of hand quickly with opinions...

Pres...did you send the letter?? Although there was a line that I personally would remove, how do think that it will go? Personally, I would take any action necessary to take care of the problem, regulation or not....that's me, but I also practice the 3 S policy. What do you think the outcome of this will be? And although you stated that your neighbors are with you on this, are you able to go it alone if they back out??? What did the police say on the matter??

Ok, first of I would like to say that I don't know what your laws are, so this is just my opinion.

I would not bother with taking them to court over this, unless you lost some very valuable birds and need to get money from them. It will just cause you a bunch of paperwork, headache, and possible monetary loss. At least in my area, if a dog attacks your flock you have every right to use lethal force. Just lock your birds in, and wait around a bit with a shotgun (or whatever other gun you may have). Just pop off the dog and dispose of it. No need to involve anyone. Chances are your neighbor will not take you to court, because they were in the wrong. If they do, well, not much can be done except show them you had every right to shoot the dog (maybe get pics of the dog on your property). I see no reason to go through all the headache of filing a lawsuit when it is not needed.

P.S. At least in my area, you need to put notices of poison up around your property if you set out poison. This is not needed if you are just going to use a gun, but if you place poison you are required to put notices up (to warn other people who may be in the area).

Good luck.

I don't know if you want to do this but it works. When I was younger we had a dog that killed a couple of our chickens. We tied the carcass of a chicken to a rope and then tied the rope to the dogs collar. After about a week the dog wanted nothing to do with the chickens.
If you can legally shoot the dog (i.e. not in city limits) and you have a shotgun and don't want to kill the dog then you can load some shells with rock salt (careful not to be too close as this can still be lethal) or use bird shot and shoot him from about 70+ yards.
Good Luck, I had trouble with neighbors cats killing my quail, I put up better wire and then I caught one in the coop and beat it pretty good...no more problems.

If you still have the letter I would remove the poison part as others mentioned.Might not even send it.What is the point since the neighbor obviously does not care? It will just flame the already strained relationship.

Killing a dog is ok by many state laws when they are killing livestock, but I don't think any allow poisoning of dogs. You would be fined for that one.

I would spray the dog ALL OVER with pepper spray and send him home...but again that might not be legal, and like the poison would be considered torturing an animal.SSS seems to be the best option.Roaming animals disappear all the time.

A lot depends on where the chicken was and where the dog was. If your chicken strayed into their yard, well, it's your fault for letting your animals get loose.

However, if their dog can onto YOUR property and killed a chicken, then they are at fault for being negligent with their animal. They are legally responsible. You can sue, etc., but that may not be fun since you have to live next to these people. I would insist that they pay for the chicken (nothing hurts unless they feel it in their wallet!) and keep their dog in their OWN yard!

The police can back you up on this. If the dog is a repeat offender, you can have it taken away from them. I always try to give people a chance, but you simply CAN'T have an animal marching into your yard to kill chickens!
My dog was behind 2 closed doors ,front doors and one door opens towards you and then a screen door, the neighbors with the chickens said that Mt dog got out but they put my dog back in my house, done something with the chickens then called the police, and I talked to the police men and he said that he didn't see no dead chickens in the yard or my dog, now why if my dog killed your chickens, wht are you going to put her back in my house
