Monitoring the temp is not really as critical as you think. As long as there is a heat source they will move toward it or away from it as they need to. Too hot is worse than too cold. If they are cold they will huddle together for warmth. But if they are too hot they have to be able to get away from the heat. As they get older they sleep farther and farther away from the heat source, then I know it's time to raise it.
